Starrling's Flight

Chapter 5
Distracted
THE TOR, GLASTONBURY, LATE 1630's

Gawen was impatient to be done meeting with Calum. Eight years could not be summarized in less than a day nor could he tackle all the ideas and issues laid before him in short order. He was unable to keep his thoughts from the beauty of Anu. Calum's lips moved but the sound was blocked by visions of the lovely lady in blue he had seen this morning. He was so lost in this reverie that he completely missed Calum’s abrupt stop.

"Gawen," Calum tilted his head, trying to gauge the boy's state. "Are ye feeling unwell?"

Color rising in his cheeks, Gawen’s attention returned to the present. "I am…weary, 'tis all," hoping that Calum could not read his true thoughts.

"Perhaps we should continue on the morrow and allow ye to settle and rest." Calum guided the young man outside and handed him over to an elder to show him to his lodging.

Gawen fell onto the bed and stared at the ceiling, wondering what Anu was doing at this moment. He imagined her in the garden combing that long auburn hair, those light brown eyes gazing softly into the sunset. He shivered and bolted upright. A walk outside would do him a world of good, perhaps even a wander past the garden. He grinned at the thought and headed outside past the gate and down the path. The village was busy, just as he had remembered it all these years. There was always some work to do before sunset and after sunset, evening devotionals took place in a variety of outside venues, creating an almost constant atmosphere of activity.

As he walked, his eyes continually searched for any sight of Anu but she was nowhere to be seen. When the last of the sunset bled into the surrounding hills, he returned to his room to join Calum at devotionals. The bells rang to let the village know that it was time to give thanks for yet another day of freedom, bounty, beauty and health.
