A very good
urban legend tale, Pumpkinhead measures up
better as a campfire story than a horror
flick, but it's worth renting. Lance
Henriksen stars in, to me, one of his better
roles. Pumpkinhead is an urban legend in a
rural town of a creature who seeks vengeance
for it's summoner- for a price. When a
widowed father (Henriksen) and his son meet a
bad fate at the hands of motorcycle punks,
Henriksen seeks out a witch to summon
Pumpkinhead for his revenge. The 'what have I
done' premise sets in pretty quick.
Pumpkinhead has great effects and uses it's
lighting well, the story is well written and
the acting is up to par. The imagery is well
done, especially the exaggerated shots of the
creature himself, played by a heavily
make-uped Tom Woodruff, Jr. For MGM, who
makes not-so-great horror, this one is
excellent. There is a quality twist ending.
There is also a sequel, which is not the best
follow-up to the story, and ends up being
more of a remake. Stick to this one and
you'll be alright. The other title for this
movie is Vengeance: The Demon. That title is
a little too telling, though.
