When Jim
Halsey stops to pick up a mysterious
hitchiker one rainy trip from Chicago to San
Diego, all hell breaks loose in this exciting
action/horror with a darkly apathetic Hauer
in the hitchiker role. Unpredictable twists
lead up to a fairly predictable ending, but
overall the film is quality entertainment. C.
Thomas Howell is Halsey, a college-age kid
who kicks off the cat-and-mouse bloodhunt
with the foretelling line; "My mother told me
never to do this...." Although Hauer's motive
is never quite clear, he makes it very
difficult for Howell to get to San Diego, by
beginning a chain of murders and leaving the
blame for Halsey. Jennifer Jason Leigh's
acting kinda sucks- she's Nash, Halsey's
mid-point love interest. Don't miss her
crowning scene- chained between trucks! The
movie is worth seeing for the action and
pace. But I strongly recommend the movie's
parent- the late 70's Duel.
