In 1978,
those masked murders we all know and love
just weren't born yet.
John Carpenter invented it. This movie, a
simple and strong premise about three teenage
girls and a psycho murderer, began most all
the clich'es, including the strong but silent
Micheal Myers, the masked nut that has a
murdering obsession. Myers' obsession
involves his
sister (Curtis), and anyone that gets in his
way. The treasure of this film is that it's
not just classic or a beginning, it could
have came out last year and still been scary,
shocking and make you afraid of the dark.
Halloween has an indepent films charm and
realness, and Hollywood's timing and acting.
Halloween is an excellent movie beyond the
genre. Anyone who hasn't seen it must- it's
an excellent segway to becoming a horror fan.
John Carpenter, the director/writer, has had
a long and healthy horror career, but his
first is still his crowning gem. Carpenter
himself played the ski masked Myers in
several scenes, or so it is rumored.
Halloween has also had several sequels, which
vary in quality. The second one picks up from
the great ending to the first- I wish they'd
have left it alone, though. It really is one
of my favorite ends. Seriously- skip H20. It
sucks and is a bad direction for the series.
In fact, I'm gonna recommend that this is the
only one you watch. As far as Carpenter's
other work, I recommend In The Mouth of
Madness. It's a departure from Halloween but
is one of his best movies. If you're
