Laurie's Practice Photos of Alexei Laurie's Impressions of Skate Canada

The exhibitions.... One drawback to these exhibitions is that they were done under competitive lighting and not show lighting - why? Exhibition programs are really much more effective with the show lighting....(grumble) Grushina & Goncharov started things off with their exhibition version of their "Gladiator" program. This is a shorter version of their free dance. Jennifer Robinson was next, wearing a black dress with sheer black netting on the back and arms. She skated to "I Put A Spell on You." Jennifer has a very soft, gentle quality to her skating, which I really like. Pretty layback and I think I saw two triple jumps. Zagorska & Siudek - Um, I'll give the costume descriptions a try, LOL, but my notes are pretty illegible! Dorota wore a dress I have described as white to gray to black at the bottom, and I show black velvet pants and vest for Mariusz. It was a pretty program skated to what I think was an Italian ballad. Ben Ferreira wore black, leather looking pants (yum!) with a black T-shirt. Skated a sexy program to rock music - "Loving Every Minute of It." Dubreuil & Lauzon - Marie-France wore a pale blue dress, Patrice wore a pale blue shirt with black pants. They skated to "The First Time I Ever Saw Your Face." Very pretty program - lots of people in the audience standing at the end. Fumie Suguri wore a navy blue skirt, bodice had a white design on it, dark netting on shoulders and arms. She skated to "Ave Maria" with a bit of Vanessa-Mae, too. Love her pretty layback, nice double axel and triple lutz. I think she did another triple, too. Petrova & Tikhonov - Maria wore what I would describe as an army green dress and the same color bodysuit for Alexei. They skated to what I would describe as chant music, sort of Middle Eastern sounding. Nice throw jump and cool lifts and spins. Matt Savoie wore a white shirt, black pants with tie and suspenders. Skated to techno music. I love his choreography. I think I saw three triples, along with his cannonball spin and neat hydroplane move. Next was a special exhibition from Bourne & Kraatz - now we know why they were here, LOL. Shae-Lynn wore her beautiful sparkly red dress and Victor wore a black tux. They skated to their OD music - "Jumpin Jack" from Big Bad Voodoo Daddy along with "Business of Love." Very sassy program, which I really like. Standing ovation, of course! Next was "Black Ice," a synchronized skating team. They wore blue costumes and were very, very good! One particular move which impressed me was when opposing skaters slipped between each other without mishap. Also, there was a neat slide move. Chait & Sakhnovsky were next, with Galit wearing an apricot and gold dress and Sergei wearing a black tux. They skated to their OD music ("Sing, Sing, Sing" medley). Michelle Kwan wore her very pretty pink dress with the silver sparkly trim on the bodice and skated to her regular exhibition program, "If I Could Change the World." Three triples and two double jumps (double axel, double loop), along with her beautiful spirals. Berezhnaya & Sikharulidze were next, skating to their Santana medley. Anton was wearing a blue shirt with a beige tie and black pants, Elena was wearing a blue and black dress. Great unison and beautiful, extended positions. The throw jump was good, but Elena fell on something? (can't read my notes - the word fell is there, but I can't read the rest of it, LOL). Many standing after this performance. Todd Eldredge - skating to "For the Glory" in his cream and blue costume. Todd was smiling as he came out because the announcer apparently took two of his national titles from him, LOL. Very nice triple axel, I think I saw another triple and three doubles - a lutz, an axel, and something else. Great Russian splits. His usual wonderful spins. Standing ovation when he was finished. Anissina & Peizerat skated to "Esmerelda" - plum and lavender costume for Marina and tan and cream costume for Gwendal. Very beautiful program - even better performance than they gave at Worlds. Lots of people standing after this one. Irina Slutskaya - wore a beautiful, cream, green, and white flowing dress. Skated to sad, classical/new age music. Triple lutz, triple loop, and triple sal, popped her axel. Fast camel spin. Nice program with a cool spin for her encore. Sale & Pelletier - performed their Prince medley to "Cream" and "Kiss." Jamie was wearing her bare midriff black costume, David wearing black, too. Nice throw jump. Standing ovation, of course. Alexei Yagudin performed his exhibition version of "Gladiator" in his latest "Gladiator" costume. This time, he had gold prop knives and didn't throw them into the audience. Four triples, including a good triple axel. Great footwork. Lots of people standing at the end. Laurie |
