(A hand is seen with a gun)
Youji (shouts): AYA!!
Aya: Eh?
Page Two
(Youji runs in front of Aya, blocking him. Aya is pushed back against the wall while Youji gets shot multiple times.)
Page Three
(A wire emerges from Youji’s watch, and Youji bites on it, extending it with his right hand. He turns around to face the sniper and lashes his wire out. In a few moments, the sniper is mutilated.)

Youji: (pants)
Aya: Yo…u…
(Voice, off-screen, shouts): AYA!! YOUJI!
Omi (runs over, shouting): AYA!
Ken: Are you okay? We heard gunshots over here…
Aya (in a state of shock): Ah…
Omi (notices something, screams): AH!
Omi (off-screen): YOUJI!!
(Youji is seen unconscious, lying in a puddle of blood, his sunglasses a foot away from his immobile form.)

Presented by Random Paradise
(Youji is seen with Aya, both are lying, covered by cloth. Youji’s face is peaceful; his eyes closed as if in a deep sleep. Aya’s face is a profile shot, which shows one of his opened eyes. His eye is colored red and he glares at the reader. Youji’s hand holds the back of Aya’s head to bring Aya’s face closer to his own. Two peony flowers are blooming by Youji’s head.)

Doctor A (while rushing Youji in on a stretcher, shouting): Prepare the AB blood!
Doctor B (shouting): Put him on O2!
Nurse (shouting): Doctor, his heart just stopped!
Doctor A (shout): Get the machine!
: Hurry it up!
Doctor B (shout): Clear!
(Clamor continues, indistinct. Time passes…)
Doctor Mercutio Bilow <note from the author: His name isn’t mentioned in the story, but it is indeed Mercutio Bilow>: Excuse me…
Dr. Bilow (enters the waiting room): Are you the relatives of Mr. Youji Kudo?
Ken (stands up): Yes, sir. How is Youji?
Dr. Bilow: How did he get shot?
Aya (from the back, muttering): …Gang war crossfire.
Dr. Bilow: We were able to remove the bullets at around 15 spots in his body and restore the liter of blood that was lost… The rest is up to him!
<Note: The human body contains around 4 liters of blood, a person can die if 1/3 that is lost. >

Omi (grabs Dr. Bilow’s arm): Wait, Doctor! Can’t we see Youji-kun?!
Dr. Bilow: Yes, but please keep it short. The patient is still in critical condition.
Omi (a bit shocked): Critical…condition…?
Dr. Bilow: He hasn’t regained consciousness yet!
(Off-screen): And I’m not sure if he will!
(Aya is shocked.)
Dr. Bilow (chibi): Can I go now? I’ve still got other emergency patients waiting.
Omi (lets go, also chibi): Ah! Sorry.
(At the ICU, Aya stands outside, watching Youji on the inside, who is hooked up to a few machines and an oxygen mask. He is bandaged on the head, chest, and hands and covered with a thin blanket.)
Sound FX: Bi. Bi. Bi.

Aya (with his hand on the window of the room): Youji…
Ken (thinks):…
Ken (pats Omi on the back): C’mon, Omi. Birman might need us.
Omi: Ah! Okay.
(Ran remembers the incident when Aya-chan was wounded in the bombing and was also rendered unconscious.)
Ran (from the flashback): Aya! Aya! AYA!!
(Back to present)
Aya (hangs his head with a guilt-stricken look on his face): God…please…

(Aya lifts the metal door of Koneko Sumu Ie enough to get in.)
Ken (who is now out of his uniform): Aya! …Birman just called about Youji…
Aya (taking off the Band-Aid on his face [he wasn’t actually hurt, but the hospital assumed that he was due to Youji’s blood splashing on him]): I’m not in the mood to listen, Ken.
Ken (turns his head and shouts): AYA! Birman said that if Youji doesn’t wake up in a month…
(Mutters): They’ll request euthanasia for Youji!
(Aya is shocked. He turns around and grabs Ken by the collar, shock turning in to anger.)
Aya: Liar…!
Omi: Wait, Aya-kun! Ken-kun isn’t lying!
Aya (calms down a bit, looks over at Omi):…
Omi (takes out a paper bag): …Here’s Youji’s stuff and room key, Birman wants you to take them there.

Aya (in front of Youji’s apartment door, keys in one hand and the bag in the other. Thinking): What in the world am I doing?
Aya (going into Youji’s bedroom, thinking while flipping on the light switch): It’s been months since I’ve been in his room…
(He notices a painting easel and stool with painting tools in front of the bookshelf on one side of the room. On the other side of the room, there’s a small round table with wire, a clamp, scissors, some paper, and a sketchbook on it. There’s also a chair by the table.)
Aya (thought): This wasn’t here last time I came…
Aya (gasps): Ah!
(A dog, most likely a mutt, comes over to Aya’s foot and sniffs.)
Aya (thought): I never knew Youji had a dog…
Aya (picking the dog up): What’s the matter, you hungry?
<Arrow pointing to Aya: "Is a dog person.">
(Aya opens a can of food for the dog and the dog is really happy…)
Aya (sweat drops): (Simple-minded…)
Aya (looks through the bag): Let’s see…

Aya (while putting some stuff on a drawer next to Youji’s bed, thinking): Sunglasses, watch…the usual…
Aya (puts his hand in the bag again):!
Aya (takes out a small box): This is…!
(The box is small but decorated elaborately with a note that says "To: AYA!" on it.)
Aya (opening the box): ?
(Aya is shocked to see what was inside the box. He pulls out a necklace with the rune "Joy" on it. He remembers when he first saw the thing…)

Youji (holding out a small black pouch): Herzlichen Glukwunsch zum Geburtstag!
(Priceless baffled look on Aya’s face.)
Aya: (HUH~~~? Are you speaking Martian?)
Youji (smiling): It’s German for "Happy Birthday."
Aya (taking the pouch in one hand since the other one’s holding a mop): Happy Birthday? (Can you not wear a sweater in July??)
Girl A (in the background): (Ah~~! Youji’s talking to someone!)
Girl B (in the background): (He’s soooo cute!)
Sound FX: Sa---
(Aya takes out the item in the pouch, it is a pair of earrings with the "Joy" rune on the chains.)
Youji (winks): It’s rune earrings.
Aya (annoyed, walking away while throwing the earrings back to Youji): Sorry, but I don’t celebrate my birthday anymore. (Give it to a "chick.")
Youji (smiles, holding up the earrings): Okay, then I’ll save it for Christmas! (You gotta celebrate that!)
Aya (annoyed): Idiot.
Youji: I will! Just wait…
<End flashback>

(Aya picks up a piece of paper inside the box and looks at it.)
Aya (sweat drop, thought): It’s Youji’s calligraphy…
Letter: "Merry Christmas to Aya Fujimiya!"
"Sorry that this present was so tacky, but the only string I could find was from my watch. But at lest the runes will protect you! ^_^"
"I’m sorry that I didn’t know about your sister’s connection with that pierced ear. Otherwise I would’ve gotten something else."
"I made the necklace myself, so please wear it! ^^;;;"
"So…Merry Christmas, Aya."

Aya (thought): It’s so simple… …But I can smell just lightly the scent of Youji…
(Flops on the bed on his side.)
Aya (thought): It’s not just the scent of his cologne…
: There are also the flowers, the wine, the women he beds…
: The cigarettes he smokes mixed with a lot of other things…
: A warm and indescribable smell…
(The dog comes over to the bed and wags its tail, Aya looks up.)
Aya: What’s the matter, boy?
Aya (while putting on his coat): You want to go out? Come on, then.
Sound FX: Ka! (The sound of the door closing.)
(Aya is wearing the rune necklace.)

(Youji is standing alone in a dark void, back facing the readers.)
Youji (thought): Where… Am I?
: It’s so dark here… What happened to me? What am I doing here?…
(From behind Youji, a shout from a boy is heard.)
(There are three boys surrounding another boy, and the three are punching and kicking one within their circle.)
Boy A (shouting) HEY, KUDO! GET UP!!

Youji (turning around, shocked. Thought.): Kudo…?! My last name is Kudo…
Youji (thought): Those voices…
Boy A (shouting): YOU LOOK LIKE A FREAK WITH YOUR GREEN EYES!
Boy B (shouting): WHAT’S WRONG WITH YOUR HAIR?!
Boy C (shout): Hey, why don’t we dye your hair and eyes black with this ink?!
Youji (thought): That’s right! My classmates hated me because of my mixed blood!
(An image of a young boy, looking up painfully with blood all over his face.)
Youji (thought): I had green eyes, wavy brown hair, and I looked too different.
(Thought): Why am I seeing these this again? Why…?

(The scene goes back to Aya, who is on the streets, following the dog. It is snowing.)
Aya: Hey! Where are we going?
Aya: Basement bar…
: So… is this where Youji hangs out?
Background music: "Tender

(The dog is already at the bar counter eating something out of a dish. Aya sits down next to it.)
Bar Girl (her name is Junko, although it’s not mentioned yet): Hey, are you the new dog-sitter?
Aya (chibi, with sweat drop): Dog-sitter?
Junko (points at the dog): For him, of course!
Aya (a bit off-guard): Um…yeah…
Junko (leans on counter): So, where’s Youji-chan?
Aya (thinking) Youji-"chan?"
Aya: Um… (Looks away, blushing): S…something came up…
Aya (thought): Soft up-beat music…
Junko (points): Anything to drink?
Aya: Um…yeah.
Background music: It’s gonna be a fine night tonight
Aya (thought): Indistinct and scattered conversations…
Background music: It’s gonna be a fine day tomorrow
Aya (thought): Mixed smells of wine…
: Just by being here, I can almost see how Youji lives…

Junko: Leaving already?
(Aya places coins that add up to 1000 yens on the counter next to his glass.)
Aya (while picking up the dog): Yeah.
Junko (waving her hand): Oh, if you see Youji-chan…
Junko (smiling with her fingers intertwined): Tell him that Junko (that’s me) said hi, and thanks to him, I passed my Theology test! (A plus, too!)
(Aya is already walking out, but he waves.)
Aya: Looks like Youji does something other than pick up women…
Aya (while pushing the gate to a graveyard open): Hey, where are we going now?
(The dog sits, wagging his tail in front of a gravestone. Aya walks up to it.)

(The gravestone’s words are covered by snow.)
Aya:?
(Aya proceeds to scrape the snow off and looks at the gravestone in shock.)
(The stone reads: "Beloved Son Youji Kudo 1977-1997.")
Aya (thought, shocked): Youji?!
Aya (thought): Youji has a grave?! How could that be?… (He walks away from the grave.)

Youji (looks at a wineglass in his hand, thinks): Eh?
Youji (raises his head, thought): Where am I now…?
(He is standing against a stone column in what seems to be a ballroom. He looks at the skylight overhead and sees a shooting star.)
Youji (thought): A shooting star…
(He notices a girl in the crowd who is also looking at the skylight. The girl turns around and smiles at him, pointing at the skylight.)
Youji (shocked, thought): That’s…!

Youji (thought): Asuka?! No, it can’t be…
Youji: N…Neu?
Girl (walking over, smiles and waves): Hey, stranger.
Girl: How come you’re not going out there?
Youji (thought): No…this isn’t Neu…! Her voice is Asuka’s!…
Asuka: And who’s this Neu person? Don’t tell me you’ve gone and picked up some other girl!
Asuka (with a worried expression): You just got out of the hospital due to a car accident…
Youji (thought): Car accident? What is she talking about…?
Asuka: The doc said that you’ve been having weird dreams lately… Are you sure you’re okay?
Youji (thought): Does that explain those…weird images? Was "Weiss" just a dream?
Youji (smiles): Nah, I’m okay, Asuka.
Youji (thought): That’s right… Weiss could not have existed! It’s too far fetched!
(Youji picks Asuka up as she puts her arms around his neck, giggling.)
Youji (thought): This is reality…!
Asuka: C’mon, let’s go and dance! You’re staying with me now, Youji!

(Youji is seen his hospital bed, the machine beeps a bit slower now.)
(Scene changes back to Aya.)
Aya (closing Youji’s bedroom door): Whew! That snow was unreal! (In the middle of November!)
(Arrow pointing to Aya: "Came to dog-sit.")
Aya (while putting his duffel bag onto Youji’s bed): Well, at least Youji’s got heat…
(While moving back, Aya’s elbow knocks into the painting easel.)
Aya:!!
(The painting falls down.)
Aya: Damn! Youji’s painting…
(Aya is shocked at what he sees.)

(The painting has an angel with red hair and black wings shown on it, although it is unfinished.)
Aya (thought): The angel with black wings… That face… Isn’t it me?!
(He notices a journal on the ground next to the painting and picks it up to read it.)
Aya (thought): Forgive me…
Journal: "November XX, Monday, Sunny. I think I’ll burn the painting right after I finish it. Aya will most definitely dice me if he saw it."
(Aya reads on while putting the painting back up.)
Journal: "Everyone seems to be just a little more depressed now, especially Aya.
"I hope that I will be able, as the oldest of Weiss, to bring their spirits up a bit…
"Even though I won’t be able to replace his sister,
"I hope I’ll be able to at least being him some comfort and happiness.
"—Youji Kudo."
(Aya closes the book and puts his one hand to his face as tears stream down his cheek.)
Aya: … Bastard…!

Youji (wakes up with a start): Ah!
Youji (thought): "Aya…?"
Asuka (putting her hand on Youji’s shoulder): Youji?
Asuka: What’s wrong? Did you have a bad dream?
Youji: Yeah. It’s just a nightmare…
Youji (thought): This is reality…
Youji: Don’t worry, Asuka.
Youji (thought): Weiss…never existed!

(Scene goes back to Aya, who is sleeping in Youji’s bed.)
Voice: …ya! Aya!
Aya: Um…
Aya (thought): Who… Impossible! That voice…!
Aya (whispers as he opens his eyes): Youji…?
(Aya sees Youji, who is covered in blood, hovering over him.)
Youji: Aya…
Aya:…
Aya (shouts): YOUJI!!

Youji: Aya…
(He begins to say some things, but nothing is heard.)
Aya (thought): What is he saying? I can’t hear him!
Youji (smiles sadly): … …I’m sorry, and…

(He releases Aya from the embrace and cups Aya’s face in his hands. Aya touches Youji’s arm.)
Youji (whispers): Good-bye.
(Tears well up in Aya’s eyes as Youji begins to fade out.)
Aya: Youji…? YOUJI!!

(Rays of sunlight shines into the room.)
Aya (thought): Morning already…?
(Aya gets a sweat drop from noticing the dog’s strange sleeping position.}
Aya (thinking while putting his coat on): I’d better hurry…
Aya (running, thought): I have a bad feeling about this… I hope I’m wrong…

Doctor A (shouts): ICU PATIENT?!
Nurse (shouts): BREATHING STOPPED NO PULSE!!
Aya (shocked, thought): What…?
Doctor A (shouts): Brain waves?
(Aya runs down the hall to the ICU room window.)
Nurse (shouts): Ah, sir! No running in the…
Aya (pressing his hands on the window, shouting): Youji!…
Aya (getting worried): … (shouts, begins to pound on the window with his fists): YOUJI! YOUJI!
Aya (shouting): WAKE UP, YOU FUCKIN’ BASTARD…!!!
Aya:!
Dr. Bilow (grabbing Aya by the arms to calm him): Mr. Fujimiya…! Please!
Aya (really pissed now, knocking Dr. Bilow away with his elbow. Shouts): LET GO OF ME!!

(His hands start to bleed from pounding too hard on the window.)
Dr. Bilow: Mr. Fujimiya…!
Aya (sinking to his knees, exhausted): You…ji…
