Alanna- My Opinion

This is my opinion, basically, of the entire Alanna book series by Tamora Pierce. I liked Alanna a lot in the beginning of the first book. When she started acting stupid about Jonathon was when I decided I didn't like her. I mean, the real thing that annoys me about her is that she kept "thinking" about climbing into bed with him when she got cold at night, which I saw no problem with. The problem I have is when she shoved the thoughts out of her mind, as if she shouldn't have them. That is part of what really bugged me. Also, I don't understand why she was "afraid" of her magic. She never gave any reasons or went deep into the subject, at least, from what I understood.

I guess I am more of a Thom fan. I don't know why, but I've always liked him better than Alanna. Actually, I think I know exactly why, but I just don't want to admit it. I like Thom better because he's more like me (what a promising future I have, huh!). He's more like me in the sense that if I were given the choice of going to learn about fighting and going to learn about magic, I would have chosen magic. I think I can understand Thom's need and love for the power that he gets from his magic. I mean, I like to feel important, and I feel important when I have power.

I think my favorite scenes with Alanna in them are when Alanna was doing important things and was being powerful. So, the idea that she didn't fully enjoy the power or importance sort of spoiled the only scenes with her that I liked.

I don't want to sound like I don't like the series, because I do, but Alanna is definitely my least favorite character. Some people (::cough, cough::) got the impression that I don’t like the series from the idea that I don’t like Alanna, which is not the case. In fact, I like all the characters in the series except for Alanna and Claw (AKA: Ralon).
