Miss Congeniality
I've always hated beauty pageants. I've never been the kind of person who could parade
around in high heels and a bathing suit. Of course, I'm way too short and definitely
the wrong size, but anyway, not my cup of tea.
Sandra Bullock plays an agent who screws up a bust and has to make good. There is
a mad bomber and he might be targeting the Miss United States pageant. She has to
go undercover to fit in. Unfortunately, she's a mess. She is quite mannish, doesn't
wear make up and likes to beat up on her co-worker whenever possible.
Michael Caine is called into service to turn her into a beauty. He does, with amazing
results. Gracie (Bullock) fits right in, except for her behaviour, which is all
FBI and tomboy. Her first attempt at the talent portion was to play water glasses.
Her second was teaching self defense. It was hysterical, if a bit strange!
The pageant is a hoot. It's a terrible tacky thing, just the way you think it is,
but the women are very interesting. Gracie bonds with many of them and of course
saves the day.
It's very funny to have William Shatner as the host of the pageant and Candice Bergen
as the former winner and hostess. They are both so over the top that they almost
deserve their own movie just to give them a chance to work on their characters.
Should you see this film? Well, on the Stella Starstruck Movie scale I give it ***
stars out of 5. It's fun, a cute date movie, good performances but a little predictable.
You could wait until it's on video!
