May 7, 2004 - Friday

A great day! I got up to go out with Van. She dropped me off at Millwoods Town Center and I had breakfast at Smittys. It was good. It's so nice to eat out here in Canada. I just tell the waiter/waitress what I can't eat and then they make a substitution for me. In Japan, I just don't get anything else. Sigh. After doing a little bit of shopping I headed out to South Edmonton Common.

The thing about South Edmonton Comnon is that everything is very far away from each other, so I got to do a lot of walking! I walked over to the theater first to see when the movies were on. I decided to see Van Helsing at 12. That meant I had to kill an hour so I went to the bookstore. The time passed quite easily and I bought a few books for myself.

Van Helsing was fun, but not as good as I had expected. I think it was because there were too many effects and not enough humans?

After the movie I went to a video store and picked up a couple of DVDs and CDs for me and for gifts. Then I had lunch at Subway, followed by a visit to a craft store for more stamps.

There were hardly any telephones in the area so I went into a Walmart to use the phone. The woman there taped my bags shut, something that doesn't happen in Japan. She was a bit shirty when I refused to put all of my bags into one, but honestly I think that I might have wrecked my books if I'd done that.

I called Van, she agreed to come and get me, so I took a brief spin around the store, and then went outside to wait. The sun was really warm, it was beautiful.

Van brought me back to her house and I watched Katie's ballet recital on video from last year. It was quite good. And also quite boring because Katie wanted me to watch the rest of it, even the parts with out her.

In the evening after dinner, Van, Katie and I walked up the hill to the video store and rented Cheaper by the Dozen and Ripley's Game. We all watched Cheaper by the Dozen and it wasn't bad. It wasn't great, but it tried. Joe and I stayed up to watch Ripley's Game. It was great, John Malkovich was terrific as always, but jetlag was really getting to me. I could barely keep my eyes open, so when it finished I just went to bed.

I'm writing this a day late of course, and just to let you know, this may well be my last entry before I go home. I probably won't be reporting until May 11th or May 12th. Don't miss me too much!
