About Sami
Sami is short for Samantha. She is a German Shepherd Mix who was adopted by us at the age of 7 1/2 weeks from the Orange County (CA) Humane Society during Thanksgiving weekend of 1993. It was so nice to have a pup in the house after experiencing the emptiness of several dogless months following the death of our 12 1/2 year old Buffy, a Cocker Mix. She was chosen by virtue of being the only female puppy available at the shelter at that time. When she was a young pup, she loved running around all over the place and had to be given time-outs occaisionally.
At the age of 10 months, Sami had a bad case of mange. Once a week for an entire month she went to the vet's office for skin scraping and therapeutic bath. The vet also told us not to use plastic dishes for feeding and no beef for Sami.
From a very early age, Sami has enjoyed tummy rubs. Many times when she sees me she lays down on the floor asking for a rub.
Sami is a homebody dog, only travelling to vet appointments. You can't even get her to take a walk.
The vet told me Sami hates her. In fact, Sami usually needs to take a sedative before an appointment with the vet.
Often when I watch Michael Crawford on TV, Sami comes and watches him with me. Unfortunately, the fan club for Michael does not allow us to sign up our pets.
Sami's daddy sent pictures of her as a puppy and as a 4-year-old adult to Fred Bergendorff, host of The Pet Place, a pet adoption show originating from Irvine, CA and shown on Saturday mornings. One morning we saw Sami's pictures broadcast on the show.
At the age of 4 1/2 years, Sami got herself a little sister when Chelsie came into our home. Sami had to learn to share her toys with Chelsie. Even though they would get into fights occaisionally, a bond developed between them. When Chelsie went to the vet's office for an overnight stay to be fixed, Sami missed her. She also acts protective towards Chelsie if she shows discomfort over being groomed.
Sami has no one favorite food. She seems to like anything that is edible. We are trying to keep her weight down to 75 lbs. or less. At night, Sami usually starts to remind me it's time to feed her around 7 PM by barking. Many times she also gets a second feeding about an hour later. She also likes to steal her sister Chelsie's food. If the humans are eating she hangs around the dinner table waiting for a chance to lick the plates clean. One time she even stole her daddy's dinner!
