puppets (why ii)

we sleep throughout our lives,
never realizing
our strings are crossing.
we sleep throughout our lives
never knowing
we make them cross.
we dream throughout our sleep
always hoping
they won't come uncrossed,
always knowing
they never will.
we live throughout our sleep
never realizing, never knowing,
always hoping, never fearing,
always asking the most important question--
why?
we sleep throughout our lives
always knowing the answer--
the only answer--
why not?
