The band was founded by Zack de la Rocha, Tom Morello, Tim Commerford, and Brad Wilk. It originated in Los Angeles, California, in 1992, under the Sony Epic Label.
The music is best described as revolutionary rock and hip-hop. However, there are elements of many other types of music, including punk, funk, and jazz.

Aside from spreading awareness through their music, Rage Against The Machine members have done much to support political issues that they believe in. This includes playing many benefit tours and concerts, giving speeches and demonstrations to support many causes, as well as participating in protests against many injustices.
Rage Against The Machine is a band whose goal is to stimulate thought, and question unjust authority, as well as arousing social justice, and the need for change.
The band seems to mainly direct their message to the youth of America, because they feel that it is the teenagers who have the greatest chance of making a change in the world, and who need to be educated of the unjust ways of the world.
