Death, Burial, and Disease

The average life span of a Neandertal was 45-50 yrs. An amazing thing was that the Neandertals were buried when they died. Some people claim that they were buried just to cover the oder but sights of Neandertals graves were found well decorated. One sight was found with horns of an animal lined in a circle around the grave. Another place where a Neandertal was buried was found with old flowers. Sometimes the person who had died was sprinkled with ocher.Other sights were found with carved bones and rocks and some tools. One of the most incredible sights was a dead Neandertal laid on a bed woven together with horsetail, a special plant. Some scientists claim that the Neandertals had rituals when someone died but no one is sure. Neandertals were sometimes crippled because of low nutrition. The first Neandertal skeleton was found with arthritis; it was also very crippled and hunched over. If a Neandertal got sick they were very well cared for. They would be alowed to rest till the day they died or got better. Someone would do there hunting or scavenging for them.
