Building A Fountain

Building a Fountain

This is not as hard as one would think if you use field stone and some brick

1) Consider the location so the fountain can be drained for the winter and so the pump can be plugged in or connected to an electrical hookup. It is also nice to be prepared if you decide to put floodlights in for that glowing look later. Use conduit to lead the wire to the center and through the stone and mortar.

2) Take some cinder block and build a base for the field stone to be built around. Maybe about two and a half feet high.

3) Use mortar mix with water and create a mud like consistency.

4) Take field stone starting with the large stones around the base and start your wall a little away from the cinder block so as to have your wall lean slightly inward.

5) Do a couple of rows at a time and let the mortar dry slightly so that building on top of it will not be difficult next time. Don't worry if it looks messy because the mortar will not completely dry for about a month and will give you plenty of time to clean the surface of the stone that will be showing.

6) Make sure that as you build you keep in mind that you will can to put some pockets in the mortar for some small plants to sit. This is what will make the rough look become a natural look when you are done.

7) You may choose to use some styrofoam with a waterproof coating at the top to form the water fall and catch basin. You can pick this up in the fountain section of you local home improvement outlet. For the water to run over and for the small pool that will catch the water. Use conduit to run the return water tube through the stone and mortar.

THIS WILL GET YOU STARTED AND ALLOW YOUR CREATIVE JUICES TO FLOW. IT IS A FUN PROJECT AND FIELD STONE AND MORTAR ARE LOW PRICED.
