Pro-Wrestling Terms

A

Angle- Storyline; wrestling plotline that continues over several matches; the reason behind a feud.

B

Blade- To cut oneself (usually on the forehead) with a sharp object (usually a razor blade).

Blade Job- To cut oneself in a match.

Blind Ref- A comment made about the ref when he conveniently misses heel tactics (usually distracted by a manager, valet, other heel wrestler, or the face's tag partner (who is arguing about the heel tactics)). Often referred to as "Special guest ref: Ray Charles".

Booker- The guy who writes the storylines, who is in the angle against whom, who wins, ect.

Bump- The result of selling a wrestler's move, especially an over-the-top-rope move; a fall or hit done as a spot.

C

Calling- To tell your opponent what the next move will be (calling the moves/calling the match)

Card- A series of matches in one location on the same day.

Carny- The language spoken by insiders; spoken quickly and ofton jumbled.

Carry- Help bring the workrate up against a lesser opponent (ex."Vader carried Michaels to a decent match").

Clean Job- A staged loss by legal pinfall or submission without resorting to illegalities (ex."Stone Cold rarely losses, and has only done two clean jobs this year")

Clique- The real life friendship of Shawn Michaels, H.H.H., Syxx, Kevin Nash, and Scott Hall.

Comp- A free ticket usually given out to make a TV taping or PPV seem more popular than it is.

D

Draw- To attract marks; an angle which is so involved, it makes people watch.

E

ECW-Extreme Championship Wrestling; formally Eastern Championship Wrestling.

F

Face- The good guy/fan favorite.

Fall- A referee's three count with the loser's shoulder's to the mat; pinfall.

Feud- An angle; a series of matches between two wrestler's (or two teams) generally between a face and a heel (ex."I'm in a feud with Diamond Dallas Page").

Feuding- To be involved in an angle with, (ex."Hogan is feuding with Sting for the World Title").

Finisher- The move that a wrestler usually uses to end his match.

Fish- A Jobber; loser

Foreign Object- An object which is not allowed in a match, used as a weapon (usually behind a ref's back).

G

Get Over- To gain acceptanceas a heel or face from the crowd.

Gimmick- A persona that a wrestler is givin (ex. "Undertaker's gimmick is that he's dead")

H

Hardcore 1- A fan who is really into the sport.

Hardcore 2- A style of wrestling that is more believable and less gimmicky (ex."ECW is hardcore")

Hardway- Bleeding without blading; getting busted open without having to slice your forehead.

Heat- Positive or negative response from the crowd (ex."Steve Austin is getting more face heat than heel heat")

Heat Machine- Dubbing over extra cheers or boos to make it seem as if the crowd is more into the match.

Heel- The bad guy; the guy your supposed to boo.

Heel Tactics- Describes actions by the bad guy.

Highspot- A particularly acrobatic or heat-provoking move (ex."those Lucha Libra matches are riddled with highspots")

House- The Wrestling Audience in the building.

Houseshow- When a promotion puts on a card, (generally away from their home base and not for a Pay-Per-View or TV taping).

J

Job- A staged loss; to allow oneself to be pinned (ex."doing the job").

Jobber- The guy who gets paid to lose just about every match; an unpushed wrestler who does jobs for pushed wrestler's.

Jobber To The Stars- Mid-card wrestler who jobs to all the big name superstars.

Juice 1- Steroids; to take steroids (ex."Hogan was on the Juice")

Juice 2- Blood; to bleed, usually as a result of blading.

K

Kay Fabe- A term that means that an outsider is near and to act like wrestling is real; if we've been kayfabed, a wrestler has told us the story the promotion is trying to sell instead of the truth (ex."don't break kayfabe by telling someone that the Undertaker isn't really dead"); comes from the word "fake".

Kill- Diminish or eliminate heat or drawing power, generally by doing too many jobs to opponents who are not credible (ex."the WWF killed Terry Taylor with the Red Rooster gimmick"); a house can be killed by too many screw-job endings.

Kliq- What Shawn Michaels fans are called.

L

Light- Not connecting with punches/kicks (ex."he's working light on the injured leg").

M

Mark- The people in the crowd that don't know the behind the scenes happenings.

Mark Out- To suspend belief during an angle (ex."I marked out when the LOD did a run-in").

Mutant- Originally coined to refer to the marks/smarks that buy into the promotion a little too much (ex."the deliverance mutants at the ECW house show were a bit scary this week") Now used to refer to just about any hardcore fan.

O

Over- Accepted by the fans; generates a lot of heat (ex."Stone Cold Steve Austin is really over since his latest turn.").

P

Paper- To hand out lots of complimentary tickets in order to make a TV taping or Pay-Per-View seem more popular than it already is (ex."That Souled Out PPV was about 90% papered")

PL- Jobber; Profesional Loser.

Policeman- The Wrestler (who is usually a legit badass) whom the promoters use to keep the disgruntled wrestlers in line.

Pop- The reaction or heat from the crowd.(ex."Flair got a huge pop when he put Hogan in the Figure Four").

Pop Entrance- To respond suddenly with heat to a wrestler's entrance or hot move (ex."The man they call Vader got the biggest pop of the night, but had the worst match on the card").

Potato- To injure or knock another wrestler unconscious by hitting him on the head.

Program- A feud that will be touring the country/world.

Push 1- To get wins over credible opponents in order to get over as a heel or face (ex."The LOD2000 are getting a real push, first over the DOA, and now a win over the New Age Outlaws").

Push 2- To get a wrestler or team over (ex."They're determined to get the Patriot to the top one month after his WWF debut").

Put Over- To do the job to help your opponent get a push (ex.:"Scott Hull really put Nash over by selling the Jackknife").

Pencil- The guy who writes the storylines, who is in an angle against whom, whom wins, ect.

PPV- A Pay-Per-View (or "paper view" if they had to hand out a lot of comps) a show that you must pay for at a premium price.

R

Red Shirt- A jobber.

Ref Bump- When a referee is "knocked out" by one or both wrestler's (usually "inadvertenly") usually signaling an run-in or heel move.

Run-in- To interfere in a match that you are not involved in (ex."the LOD2000 did a run-in to start an angle with the DOA").

S

Save- A run-in to protect a wrestler from being beat up after the match is over (ex."Luger beat up Hall and Dusty Rhodes came in to save him").
