My Ending to Human Reaction

by Steph

SPOILERS: Human Reaction

SUMMARY: I didn't care much for how the episode ended, so I made my own up. You could say it's just a continuation of what actually happened.

DISCLAIMER: I don't own 'em, the respective companies do. I'm just borrowing the characters for a while and promise to return them unharmed :-)

NOTES: Many, many thanks to my wonderful beta reader: Sharon, Jodie and Jill. You guys were a tremendous help. I guess that is about it, so enjoy :-)

"Good-bye John, maybe we'll meet again."

John stood at the doorway looking at the swirling light. He turned to acknowledge the alien, who he once thought to be his father. "Maybe," John replied and then stepped into the light.

The next thing John knew, he was back on Moya with the others. John was still dressed in the jeans and blue shirt he was wearing on the 'fake Earth.' Aeryn was still in the dress John had her put on.

"How did we get back here?" D'Argo asked.

"I don't know," Aeryn answered.

Zhaan appeared then, walking down the corridor. "Are you all okay? We became worried when Pilot informed us that the transport was sucked into the wormhole."

"We're fine," John finally answered. "just fine." He turned and walked down the corridor to his quarters.

The others just looked at each other, confused over John's behavior. Aeryn wasn't going to admit it to the others, but she knew how John felt.

A while later, Aeryn found John standing on the terrace. He was still wearing the jeans and shirt, telling Aeryn that he went straight here, instead of going back to his quarters. Aeryn smiled to herself, she preferred seeing Crichton in jeans, they fit him better than his other baggy pants and the colors brought out the blue in his eyes. She focused again on why she was here and walked up, next to Crichton. Aeryn stood there until John turned his head to acknowledge her.

"I see you took the dress of," John commented, noticing that again was again dressed in black. "Is that what it was called?" John smiled, and again they stood in silence.

"Are you okay?" Aeryn finally asked.

"I actually thought that I was going home, Aeryn."

"That wasn't your home, Crichton. It was all made up."

"I know," he sighed.

"Are you sad about that?" Aeryn asked quietly.

"Part of me is, but when I was in the shuttle getting ready to go into the wormhole, I thought of you guys and what I would be leaving behind. I was heading back home, back to uncertainty.  I felt comfortable here and didn't want to leave. I didn't want to leave you."

"I didn't want you leave either, I think that is why I came looking for you." John looked over at her surprised. "If you left, then I would be alone, again."

"You could have come with me Aeryn."

"No, even though that wasn't your Earth, what happened just proved even more that I don't belong there."

"I'm sorry Aeryn," John sighed, turning towards Aeryn. "None of that was supposed to happen. Earth isn't really like that; you wouldn't have been locked up or subjected to tests. I would have kept you safe." John looked Aeryn in the eyes when he said the last statement, leaving no room for debate.

"I did enjoy some of the things though," Aeryn smiled.

John smiled, "Oh yeah. What?"

Aeryn smiled back, "The rain. We don't have anything like it on my home."

Crichton stepped closer to Aeryn, eliminating the distance between them. "Un-huh." John looked down at Aeryn's lips and then back up. "Anything else?"

"The drink...the bear."

"The beer." John corrected her. "I liked you in the dress."

"I didn't." Aeryn smiled.

Crichton smiled in response. "And I liked this."  John slowly lowered his mouth to Aeryn's, giving her time to move away if she wanted. He kissed her gently at first, when she didn't pull away John brought his hands up, cupping Aeryn's face, so that he could deepen the kiss.  Aeryn wrapped her arms around John's waist, pulling him closer.

A few minutes later, John ended the kiss. He rested his forehead against Aeryn's, still holding on to her face. John lifted his head and looked at Aeryn for a minute.

"Aeryn, I..." Aeryn brought her hand up to John's mouth to silence him.

"Don't say anything." Aeryn looked at John for a moment longer, then stepped from his embrace and walked away.

Aeryn knew that if she stayed there a moment longer, she would have told Crichton that she would go back to Earth with him. Aeryn didn't know what was happening between them, she was scared by it, but she also knew that it couldn't continue beyond their association on Moya.

Damn, Crichton thought to himself, watching Aeryn walk away. There I go again, messing everything up. But I just couldn't help it. Aeryn is nothing like any of the other women on Earth. I've never been this attracted to a woman before. John turned and looked out at the stars, wondering where his home actually was. He smiled when a thought crossed his mind. Aeryn will be coming home with me. She just doesn't know it yet.
