I bit back a gasp of pain as my arms were pulled tightly behind my back and locked in place using the PeaceKeeper version of handcuffs.  The PeaceKeeper commander, someone I did not recognize, pulled me up by my arms, sending a flash of white-hot pain through my upper back as my shoulders were nearly pulled out of their sockets.  There was silence in Moya's main cargo bay, as both the PeaceKeeper troops and my friends stopped their shooting, waiting to see what would happen next.

"One more shot... from any of you... and he dies now.  If you all come out and lower your weapons... he will survive long enough for all of you to say your good-byes."  The captain's voice was calm, cold.  I had no doubt that he'd kill me without a second thought.

"One thing, Captain," I muttered, loud enough for only him to hear.  "I don't like good-byes."  Raising my voice, I yelled out.  "Shoot them!"

The PeaceKeeper captain threw me against the wall as he raised his gun to defend himself.  I shook my head, dizzy and breathless but feeling better now that I'd made my decision.  If I had to die for the freedom of my friends, I would.  At least they had a chance, and they could fight without feeling as if they'd abandoned me or done me some disservice.

Provided they'd care, of course.

I'd like to think they would.

Without the use of my arms, it took me several seconds to get up from the floor where I'd ended up landing.  I struggled to see through the sea of guns and military insignia to where my friends were holding up the defense. I heard the telltale shots of the little DRDs as they defended Moya against our PeaceKeeper invaders and couldn't help but smile at the thought of the little DRD army up against the PeaceKeepers.

My smile faded as the shooting stopped once more.  They had Aeryn.

She was shoved towards me, her arms bound behind her back like mine were. Unable to stop herself, she fell against me and we both went down.  "Ugh," I muttered as I landed on my arms.  Again I struggled to get up, this time with Aeryn's assistance.  No sooner had we accomplished the task than we were brought, together, in front of the PeaceKeeper offensive.

The captain seemed to like having us both as bargaining chips, but from the look in Aeryn's eyes, I suspected we were to be used more along the lines of personal body shields.  "The only way to shoot us is to shoot your colleages," the captain noted.  "It's up to you."

Twisting, I turned my head to lock eyes with Aeryn's.  Without moving, she opened her mouth.  "If we die," she said aloud, "we die together.  Do what you--" her words were cut off as a PeaceKeeper hand covered her mouth. As another hand moved to cover mine, I finished her sentence.  "Do what you must!" I yelled as I was gagged.  A gun pressed against the base of my spine and I winced slightly.  Shooting another glance in Aeryn's direction, I copied her stance--straight up, feet apart, head held high.  If we were going to die, I guess we were going to do it in style.

D'Argo, Zhaan, and Chiana managed to avoid shooting us at first, taking out the PeaceKeepers on the fringes of the group.  But Aeryn and I both knew that our luck would not hold out for long.  "Aeryn," I tried to say against the gag.  All I ended up doing was choking, and it took several seconds to regain breath.

Hearing the garbled sound, she looked back at me, and I realized that there was nothing I could say that she didn't know.  A strange sense of peace came over me.  Turning back to face what would certainly be my death, I resumed the warrior position next to Aeryn.  As D'Argo's eyes rose above the crate he'd been behind I nodded slightly to him in understanding.  Nodding back to us both, he took aim at the only people he could aim at if he wished to kill the PeaceKeeper troops... myself and Aeryn.

This is it.  This is the end.  Oh, god, Aeryn... I'll see you again soon, I hope...  Swallowing as fear washed over me, I resolved not to make a sound.  Taking as deep a breath as I could with a gag in my mouth, I nodded once more to D'Argo to show him that I was ready.

The last thing I saw as I fell was Aeryn, standing tall and proud as she'd been born to do, facing down D'Argo's gun.
