Britney Spears- "Baby One More Time" World Tour
Date: July 31, 1999
Location: Universal Amphitheater; Universal City, California
Rating: and 1/2

Seventeen-year-old Britney Spears has embarked on her first solo world tour. After touring earlier this year as the opening act for fab five *Nsync, Britney has finally come into her own. Her popularity has exploded with her hit singles "Baby One More Time," "Sometimes," and the current "Crazy." Britney has attained quite the following of young, teenage males, as well as preteen females. Most of the crowd was comprised of either elementary-aged girls and their mothers or hormonal teenage boys; I seemed to be the odd woman out (with my friend Britt of course).

After seeing Britney three times in her spot before *Nsync, I really wasn't expecting a great performance. Her earlier performances were uninspired and lifeless, so I was expecting much of the same this time around. However, Britney blew me away with her new show. Complete with staircase, live band, pyrotechnics, a wardrobe by Tommy Hilfiger, amazing choreography, and a super-talented troupe of six dancers, Miss Spears' tour was impressive, to say the least. The opening sequence leaves a bit to be desired, with a classroom theme extended from the "Baby One More Time" video, but the opening song "Crazy" starts with a bang. The choreography is fast-paced and energetic, a sure-fire way to hype up the audience. The energy continues throughout the night, thanks to the talents of the six amazing dancers that back Britney up. It's hard to say whether it's Britney or the dancers that carry this tour off.

One of my favorite parts of this show is Britney's tribute to timeless pop divas Madonna and Janet Jackson. The medley of "Material Girl," "Vogue," "Nasty," and "Black Cat" is definitely one of the highlights of the show. One complaint though: Britney, this is a family show; I'm not so sure the black leather hot pants and matching top were such a bright idea… especially when you rip your dress off to reveal them. Costuming seems to be another major factor in this show, with Britney changing clothes every few songs. Her style ranges from vinyl tube tops and matching pants, to little pink dresses, to hot pants, to comfy overalls, to her famous school girl getup. It's entertaining to just sit there and wonder what she'll be wearing next.

Overall, Britney's new show is extremely entertaining; its high-energy dancing and Britney's adorable personality guarantee a good time for all. Even if you aren't a huge Britney fan, the dancing alone is reason enough to catch this tour. Britney's live singing seems to have improved for her last tour, but it is a little suspicious that her vocals seem to match the CD tracks exactly. Whether it's just extreme talent or something else remains to be seen; I'm not accusing, just stating an observation. Whatever the case, Britney Spears is an excellent entertainer and if you get the chance to see her show, take it!
