Mark 3

What angers Jesus?

Mark 3:1 And he entered again into the synagogue; and there was a man there which had a withered hand.
Mark 3:2 And they watched him, whether he would heal him on the sabbath day; that they might accuse him.

A man with a withered hand in the presence of the Son of God. The all powerful, loving son, who has no sin and hates evil, yet loves the sinner who comes to him in need. The Pharisees, the proud religious leaders who knew the law and used the law to condemn and destroy, in the presence of the Lord of grace and justice. They plotted, to find something to accuse him of, he saw their hearts and also saw the need of the man with the withered hand. It was the sabbath, and Jesus had already stated that he was Lord of the sabbath. No sinful man could claim to be the Lord of the sabbath, only God is Lord of the sabbath. Jesus is God come in a man.

Mark 3:3 And he saith unto the man which had the withered hand, Stand forth.
Mark 3:4 And he saith unto them, Is it lawful to do good on the sabbath days, or to do evil? to save life, or to kill? But they held their peace.

Wow, he being perfectly righteous puts forth a declaration of pure justice and truth. Jesus is our justice and truth, we cannot go around Him. If we seek truth and perfect justice we must face Jesus as who he is, our Lord and savior. "Is it lawful to do good on the sabbath days, or to do evil? to save life, or to kill? But they held their peace."

Mark 3:5 And when he had looked round about on them with anger, being grieved for the hardness of their hearts, he saith unto the man, Stretch forth thine hand. And he stretched it out: and his hand was restored whole as the other.

Jesus angry? God angry? Yes, at the cold and hard hearts of sinners. Is not the Spirit grieved?

Eph 4:30 And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.
Eph 4:31 Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice:
Eph 4:32 And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you.
Eph 5:1 Be ye therefore followers of God, as dear children;

Jesus went ahead and healed the man, in spite of the plotting religious leaders.

Mark 3:6 And the Pharisees went forth, and straightway took counsel with the Herodians against him, how they might destroy him.

True to their wicked hearts, they saw no good but continued in their hard hearted plans, going to the Herodians, who were not a religious party; they were a group of Jews who were sympathetic to King Herod and supported his rule. The world will always oppose the things of God, for the world has another god who is satan, the accuser and liar, who seeks to destroy the work of God. Sinners can always find supporters. Who will stand up for Jesus and truth?

Son of God Heals

Mark 3:7 But Jesus withdrew himself with his disciples to the sea: and a great multitude from Galilee followed him, and from Judaea,
Mark 3:8 And from Jerusalem, and from Idumaea, and from beyond Jordan; and they about Tyre and Sidon, a great multitude, when they had heard what great things he did, came unto him.

His healings made him popular, for he healed all who came to him. We must realize that he can heal today, by trusting in him. The greatest healing many then as now have overlooked; the forgiveness of sins and eternal life. To receive life, we must give all to Jesus in complete surrender.

Mark 3:9 And he spake to his disciples, that a small ship should wait on him because of the multitude, lest they should throng him.

As in Matthew 13:

Mat 13:2 And great multitudes were gathered together unto him, so that he went into a ship, and sat; and the whole multitude stood on the shore.

Mark 3:10 For he had healed many; insomuch that they pressed upon him for to touch him, as many as had plagues.
Mark 3:11 And unclean spirits, when they saw him, fell down before him, and cried, saying, Thou art the Son of God.

Did you hear what they said? Thou art the Son of God. Yes, he is, but by publicizing this, satan would try to stop Jesus, even through their trusted religious leaders. Many even today who have titles of importance in religious places, are liberal, false leaders, siding with the government (as with the Herodians) and the unrighteous groups, in the name of open minded and self righteous correctness, trying to stop the work of Jesus Christ.

Psa 75:4 I said unto the fools, Deal not foolishly: and to the wicked, Lift not up the horn:
Psa 75:5 Lift not up your horn on high: speak not with a stiff neck.
Psa 75:6 For promotion cometh neither from the east, nor from the west, nor from the south.
Psa 75:7 But God is the judge: he putteth down one, and setteth up another.
Psa 75:8 For in the hand of the LORD there is a cup, and the wine is red; it is full of mixture; and he poureth out of the same: but the dregs thereof, all the wicked of the earth shall wring them out, and drink them.

We war spiritually against the powers of this world, funded by the devil, with many fair sounding names, but with a common purpose: to remove Jesus from our lives. We will obey our Lord and proclaim His name boldly.

Mark 3:12 And he straitly charged them that they should not make him known.

The jealous religious leaders were looking for reasons to kill him. This was the reason they used, he says that he is God's son. Their unbelief called this blasphemy. He is the Son of God, but his time of dying for our sins had not yet come. He had this time of touching the people, teaching them, healing them, body and soul. Has he touched you? Will you be taught of him and be his disciple?

Isa 6:8 Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? Then said I, Here am I; send me.
Isa 6:9 And he said, Go, and tell this people, Hear ye indeed, but understand not; and see ye indeed, but perceive not.
Isa 6:10 Make the heart of this people fat, and make their ears heavy, and shut their eyes; lest they see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and convert, and be healed.
Isa 6:11 Then said I, Lord, how long? And he answered, Until the cities be wasted without inhabitant, and the houses without man, and the land be utterly desolate,
Isa 6:12 And the LORD have removed men far away, and there be a great forsaking in the midst of the land.
Isa 6:13 But yet in it shall be a tenth, and it shall return, and shall be eaten: as a teil tree, and as an oak, whose substance is in them, when they cast their leaves: so the holy seed shall be the substance thereof.

Jesus the Holy Seed, the Word of God, our healer.

Calling the twelve

Mark 3:13 And he goeth up into a mountain, and calleth unto him whom he would: and they came unto him.

He called to those His Father gave to him.

John 6:37 All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.
John 6:38 For I came down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me.
John 6:39 And this is the Father's will which hath sent me, that of all which he hath given me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up again at the last day.
John 6:40 And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day.

John 17:12 While I was with them in the world, I kept them in thy name: those that thou gavest me I have kept, and none of them is lost, but the son of perdition; that the scripture might be fulfilled.

Mark 3:14 And he ordained twelve, that they should be with him, and that he might send them forth to preach,

He chose them to be heralds, witnesses of his word and truth. As the angels were sent to the shepherds, so were the twelve disciples to be sent forth with the gospel message.

Mark 3:15 And to have power to heal sicknesses, and to cast out devils:

They also were given divine power to heal and to cast out devils. This was a special filling of God's Spirit, to do His supernatural work, before the Spirit came to stay after Pentecost.

Mark 3:16 And Simon he surnamed Peter;

Mat 16:16 And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.
Mat 16:17 And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven.
Mat 16:18 And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.
Mat 16:19 And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.

Mark 3:17 And James the son of Zebedee, and John the brother of James; and he surnamed them Boanerges, which is, The sons of thunder:

Luke 9:52 And sent messengers before his face: and they went, and entered into a village of the Samaritans, to make ready for him.
Luke 9:53 And they did not receive him, because his face was as though he would go to Jerusalem.
Luke 9:54 And when his disciples James and John saw this, they said, Lord, wilt thou that we command fire to come down from heaven, and consume them, even as Elias did?
Luke 9:55 But he turned, and rebuked them, and said, Ye know not what manner of spirit ye are of.
Luke 9:56 For the Son of man is not come to destroy men's lives, but to save them. And they went to another village.

Mark 3:18 And Andrew, and Philip, and Bartholomew, and Matthew, and Thomas, and James the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus, and Simon the Canaanite,
Mark 3:19 And Judas Iscariot, which also betrayed him: and they went into an house.

Was Judas a mistake? No, God knows who will be faithful and who are fake. Judas loved money more than the Lord. We need to put the love of the Lord first. If we need anything, he will provide when we serve him with all our heart. No one is perfect, we all need to be more faithful. Lord increase our faith.

Jesus is able

Mark 3:20 And the multitude cometh together again, so that they could not so much as eat bread.

As the disciples were in the house with Jesus, the multitude came to them, so that they were even unable to eat. A crowd can be confusing, but they came for Jesus. He is their hope. Jesus is still our hope.

Mark 3:21 And when his friends heard of it, they went out to lay hold on him: for they said, He is beside himself.

These friends were perhaps of his own household, who did not see him as the Son of God. Is God ever confused? Is God perplexed or beside himself? Does God need help? Weak flesh needs help, but Jesus was well able to calm the crowd as he calmed the raging sea by speaking to it.

Mark 3:22 And the scribes which came down from Jerusalem said, He hath Beelzebub, and by the prince of the devils casteth he out devils.

Oh oh, now here are the religious leaders, the keepers of God's word accusing the living Word. The Scribes say that he does these mighty miracles by the power of the devil. Jesus would have to defend himself. They did not know Jesus. They themselves were doing the work of satan. Beware of the accusers! The scribes were not of God's Spirit. Jesus will teach them a lesson about the Holy Spirit. He certainly knew the spirits.

John 3:34 For he whom God hath sent speaketh the words of God: for God giveth not the Spirit by measure unto him.

At times when we are tired or hungry, satan may send crowds or confusion and the accusers to bring you down. Stand in God's Spirit and do not fall. The Lord is your strength. You stand in His word and the devil will flee.

James 4:7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
James 4:8 Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded.

If we run from the devil, we will not find rest.

Blaspheme of the Holy Spirit

Mark 3:23 And he called them unto him, and said unto them in parables, How can Satan cast out Satan?

Jesus answers the Scribes who said that he casts out devils by the power of the devil. This is important. The spirit does not oppose itself, the devil's people are in unity against Jesus Christ. We as his disciples are to be one, united by the Holy Spirit. When someone in the Internet chat room opposes the speaking of God's word we know they are not speaking from God's Spirit. God loves His Word.

Mark 3:24 And if a kingdom be divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand.
Mark 3:25 And if a house be divided against itself, that house cannot stand.

His words are spiritual and can also be applied to our nation and to our homes. Restoration and unity are through the Lord Jesus Christ. Division and bad things are from the devil. One nation under God is being attacked by those speaking diversity of cultures. Christianity, that has been the heart of our nation and the basis of our laws and unity is under attack; separation and division are the work of the devil, in the hearts of evil backslidden people.

Mark 3:26 And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.

Division destroys, in unity there is strength. For example: The United States of America, one nation, under God.

Mark 3:27 No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strong man; and then he will spoil his house.

In our nation it is called judicial activism, the judges overturning what was accepted before in the name of political correctness.

In a positive Biblical interpretation Jesus binds satan, the strong man and takes back what was created for God. We were created in the image of God to glorify Him and be one with Him. Jesus came to return us to the Father.

Mark 3:28 Verily I say unto you, All sins shall be forgiven unto the sons of men, and blasphemies wherewith soever they shall blaspheme:

Jesus, full of grace and forgiveness. No matter what we have done or said against his name, will be forgiven.

John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
John 3:17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.

Jesus, through God's Holy Spirit makes us one in Him.

John 17:11 And now I am no more in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to thee. Holy Father, keep through thine own name those whom thou hast given me, that they may be one, as we are.

Eph 2:4 But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us,
Eph 2:5 Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;)
Eph 2:6 And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus:
Eph 2:7 That in the ages to come he might show the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus.

Mark 3:29 But he that shall blaspheme against the Holy Ghost hath never forgiveness, but is in danger of eternal damnation:

The Holy Spirit must lead us to Jesus. If we deny the work of God's Spirit, we cannot receive Jesus and forgiveness. The Spirit is the power of God to become a child of God. The Scribes said that the work of Jesus was by the power of the devil, not acknowledging the power of God.

Mark 3:30 Because they said, He hath an unclean spirit.

Here were the Scribes in their religious robes, looking important, demanding respect, as do our antichrist judges. They wish to remove Jesus and his power from this world. They cannot, but they are in danger of eternal damnation.

Who is Family?

Mark 3:31 There came then his brethren and his mother, and, standing without, sent unto him, calling him.

Are you all right son? Yes, he was doing what His Father required of him. Only Mary knew him as God's Son, his brothers and sisters did not believe until after the resurrection. Brothers and sisters?

Mat 13:55 Is not this the carpenter's son? is not his mother called Mary? and his brethren, James, and Joses, and Simon, and Judas?
Mat 13:56 And his sisters, are they not all with us? Whence then hath this man all these things?

Mark 3:32 And the multitude sat about him, and they said unto him, Behold, thy mother and thy brethren without seek for thee.

Who do we serve? We do the will of God.

Mark 3:33 And he answered them, saying, Who is my mother, or my brethren?

Who is Jesus from? Who is His Father? God is His Father.

Mark 3:34 And he looked round about on them which sat about him, and said, Behold my mother and my brethren!
Mark 3:35 For whosoever shall do the will of God, the same is my brother, and my sister, and mother.

As Jesus did the Father's will, serving him. His true brothers and sisters and mother, serve God in His Spirit.

John 4:24 God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.

The Scribes said he served Beelzebub. Jesus served His Father, God of all creation. All those who serve God are the family of God. They are family in His Spirit. They must honor Jesus and they honor his father. You cannot serve God apart from Jesus.

Col 2:6 As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him:
Col 2:7 Rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving.
Col 2:8 Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.
Col 2:9 For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.
Col 2:10 And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power:

1 John 4:2 Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God:
1 John 4:3 And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world.
1 John 4:4 Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.
