John 4

Samaritan Woman

John 4:1 When therefore the Lord knew how the Pharisees had heard that Jesus made and baptized more disciples than John,

It was not yet time to be judged of the Pharisees in Jerusalem.

John 4:2 (Though Jesus himself baptized not, but his disciples,)
John 4:3 He left Judaea, and departed again into Galilee.

Jesus moves on towards Galilee.

John 4:4 And he must needs go through Samaria.

The shortest way to Galilee was through Samaria, but the Jews hated the Samaritans and would usually go around them. It was an insult for a Jew to be called a Samaritan. The Jewish leaders, later on would try to find fault with Jesus. They insulted him, calling him a Samaritan.

John 8:47 He that is of God heareth God's words: ye therefore hear them not, because ye are not of God.
John 8:48 Then answered the Jews, and said unto him, Say we not well that thou art a Samaritan, and hast a devil?
John 8:49 Jesus answered, I have not a devil; but I honour my Father, and ye do dishonour me.

Jesus knew that he was needed in Samaria. People there needed to hear his message. He knew because he was listening to His father.

John 4:5 Then cometh he to a city of Samaria, which is called Sychar, near to the parcel of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph.

This property was given to the sons of Joseph by Jacob. In this area Joseph's bones were buried.

John 4:6 Now Jacob's well was there. Jesus therefore, being wearied with his journey, sat thus on the well: and it was about the sixth hour.

This is the only mention in the Bible of Jacob's well. The well is still in existence.

The man Jesus, became tired and thirsty, just like we do. He had blood too, that would bleed for us. He felt the pain of the whips and the torture on the cross. He was human as we are, yet without sin.

Heb 4:15 For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.

John 4:7 There cometh a woman of Samaria to draw water: Jesus saith unto her, Give me to drink.

The time was the sixth hour after sunrise, about twelve noon. Most ladies came to the well in the early morning, with other ladies. It was a social event. This lady came in the heat of the day, probably not liked by the women because of her life style. Jesus spoke to her, it was not the custom for a man to speak to a woman alone, especially a Jew to a Samaritan woman. But Jesus purposely came to the well to meet this lady. It was her time to meet the Messiah.

John 4:8 (For his disciples were gone away unto the city to buy meat.)
John 4:9 Then saith the woman of Samaria unto him, How is it that thou, being a Jew, askest drink of me, which am a woman of Samaria? for the Jews have no dealings with the Samaritans.

The Samaritans were a mixture of races and they also mixed foreign religions with the Jewish law, the first five books of the Bible. Because of their racial impurity and impurity of doctrine, they were despised by the proud Jews. Jesus always showed grace to those who were despised by the world. He elevated women, giving them love and forgiveness.

John 4:10 Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water.

Jesus speaks to her, not answering her question, but offering her something spiritual, living water from God's spirit. He was giving her something to think about. Later he would speak of the living waters, and John describes what this is.

John 7:37 In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink.
John 7:38 He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.
John 7:39 (But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.)

John 4:11 The woman saith unto him, Sir, thou hast nothing to draw with, and the well is deep: from whence then hast thou that living water?

Like Nicodemus, she did not see the spiritual meaning of Jesus' words. She responded to the natural.

John 4:12 Art thou greater than our father Jacob, which gave us the well, and drank thereof himself, and his children, and his cattle?

Yes, the Son of God is greater than Jacob. Jesus came from heaven.

John 4:13 Jesus answered and said unto her, Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again:
John 4:14 But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.

He is speaking of a born again person, filled with God's living spirit.

John 4:15 The woman saith unto him, Sir, give me this water, that I thirst not, neither come hither to draw.

She wants this living water and Jesus wants her to have it, but first she must repent.

John 4:16 Jesus saith unto her, Go, call thy husband, and come hither.

Jesus speaks of something personal.

John 4:17 The woman answered and said, I have no husband. Jesus said unto her, Thou hast well said, I have no husband:

She told him the truth, and he with God's knowledge tells her secret things.

John 4:18 For thou hast had five husbands; and he whom thou now hast is not thy husband: in that saidst thou truly.

There are no secret things with the Lord, he knows all about us. No since in hiding or lying to him, because you cannot hide from or fool God.

John 4:19 The woman saith unto him, Sir, I perceive that thou art a prophet.

She sees something spiritual in Jesus, a prophet tells of things to come.

John 4:20 Our fathers worshipped in this mountain; and ye say, that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship.

She changed the subject, perhaps being ashamed of her life.

John 4:21 Jesus saith unto her, Woman, believe me, the hour cometh, when ye shall neither in this mountain, nor yet at Jerusalem, worship the Father.
John 4:22 Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship: for salvation is of the Jews.

The Savior is come of the Jews. The law and the prophets spoke of his coming.

John 4:23 But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him.

God's Holy Spirit will come to man, following the return of Jesus to the Father. The Spirit of truth, by which we worship God.

John 14:16 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;
John 14:17 Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.
John 14:18 I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.
John 14:19 Yet a little while, and the world seeth me no more; but ye see me: because I live, ye shall live also.
John 14:20 At that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you.

John 4:24 God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.

What is worship that is of the spirit, and of truth?

Heb 11:6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

It requires faith and belief in the true God. We do not make up a religion, nor do we worship a false thing. We are to see God, to know him, to know his word and pray and follow him through his Spirit. Some say that it matters not what you believe, that all roads lead to heaven. No, this is false. Many worship what they do not know what is. Many worship false god's and deceiving spirits.

John 4:25 The woman saith unto him, I know that Messias cometh, which is called Christ: when he is come, he will tell us all things.

The woman was beginning to see in the spirit who Jesus was.

John 4:26 Jesus saith unto her, I that speak unto thee am he.

Jesus revealed himself to this sinner, a lowly Samaritan woman. He did not tell the Jews who he was. They knew by his works and the witness of Andrew and John the Baptist.

John 1:29 The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.
John 1:30 This is he of whom I said, After me cometh a man which is preferred before me: for he was before me.
John 1:31 And I knew him not: but that he should be made manifest to Israel, therefore am I come baptizing with water.
John 1:32 And John bare record, saying, I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it abode upon him.
John 1:33 And I knew him not: but he that sent me to baptize with water, the same said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, the same is he which baptizeth with the Holy Ghost.
John 1:34 And I saw, and bare record that this is the Son of God.

John 1:40 One of the two which heard John speak, and followed him, was Andrew, Simon Peter's brother.
John 1:41 He first findeth his own brother Simon, and saith unto him, We have found the Messias, which is, being interpreted, the Christ.

John 4:27 And upon this came his disciples, and marvelled that he talked with the woman: yet no man said, What seekest thou? or, Why talkest thou with her?

The disciples saw that he was talking alone to this woman. They were amazed, yet none spoke what they were thinking. Jesus knew there thoughts too. He knew what he was doing.

John 4:28 The woman then left her waterpot, and went her way into the city, and saith to the men,

Upon hearing that Jesus was Messiah, she dropped everything and wen to the city to speak to the men. The disciples who were called by Jesus, also dropped what they were doing and followed him, when the master called.

John 4:29 Come, see a man, which told me all things that ever I did: is not this the Christ?
John 4:30 Then they went out of the city, and came unto him.

She became a witness for Jesus and brought many men to him. Come see a man, who is the Christ.

Jesus reached out to someone that truly needed forgiveness. He loved those who were needing love, God's love and a new heart. Those who are forgiven much, love much.

Luke 7:40 And Jesus answering said unto him, Simon, I have somewhat to say unto thee. And he saith, Master, say on.
Luke 7:41 There was a certain creditor which had two debtors: the one owed five hundred pence, and the other fifty.
Luke 7:42 And when they had nothing to pay, he frankly forgave them both. Tell me therefore, which of them will love him most?
Luke 7:43 Simon answered and said, I suppose that he, to whom he forgave most. And he said unto him, Thou hast rightly judged.
Luke 7:44 And he turned to the woman, and said unto Simon, Seest thou this woman? I entered into thine house, thou gavest me no water for my feet: but she hath washed my feet with tears, and wiped them with the hairs of her head.
Luke 7:45 Thou gavest me no kiss: but this woman since the time I came in hath not ceased to kiss my feet.
Luke 7:46 My head with oil thou didst not anoint: but this woman hath anointed my feet with ointment.
Luke 7:47 Wherefore I say unto thee, Her sins, which are many, are forgiven; for she loved much: but to whom little is forgiven, the same loveth little.
Luke 7:48 And he said unto her, Thy sins are forgiven.

Jesus loves the sinner, man or women, he is the friend of all in need.

Harvest

John 4:31 In the mean while his disciples prayed him, saying, Master, eat.
John 4:32 But he said unto them, I have meat to eat that ye know not of.

Something's are more important than food. When a life is needing to be reborn, nothing is more important. Often we are called to witness at inconvenient times. But, what is most important to us? Our own comfort, or the saving of a lost soul? Yes, we need to eat good food to keep our bodies healthy, for this is the temple of the Holy Spirit. Jesus had meat to eat that the disciples knew nothing of. It was the word of God and his will to obey.

John 4:33 Therefore said the disciples one to another, Hath any man brought him ought to eat?
John 4:34 Jesus saith unto them, My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work.

His meat and great purpose was to do the will of the Father. To fulfill and finish the work he was given. Do we have the purpose of God as our food? Our greatest hunger?

Mat 5:6 Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.

Psa 119:103 How sweet are thy words unto my taste! yea, sweeter than honey to my mouth!

John 4:35 Say not ye, There are yet four months, and then cometh harvest?

There is a time known for the harvest of grain.

behold, I say unto you, Lift up your eyes, and look on the fields; for they are white already to harvest.

Look up, the men of Samaria are coming to hear of the Christ. They were probably dressed in white. A great harvest coming to see the Christ and to hear his word. The disciples were not yet aware of the opportunity. How many oportunities have we missed by having our minds on other things?

John 4:36 And he that reapeth receiveth wages, and gathereth fruit unto life eternal: that both he that soweth and he that reapeth may rejoice together.

There is an eternal reward, first is the souls who will be in heaven. Nothing else matters, but to obey the Father.

Phil 3:20 For our conversation is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ:
Phil 3:21 Who shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto his glorious body, according to the working whereby he is able even to subdue all things unto himself.
Phil 4:1 Therefore, my brethren, dearly beloved and longed for, my joy and crown, so stand fast in the Lord, my dearly beloved.

John 4:37 And herein is that saying true, One soweth, and another reapeth.
John 4:38 I sent you to reap that whereon ye bestowed no labour: other men laboured, and ye are entered into their labours.

1 Cor 3:6 I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase.
1 Cor 3:7 So then neither is he that planteth any thing, neither he that watereth; but God that giveth the increase.
1 Cor 3:8 Now he that planteth and he that watereth are one: and every man shall receive his own reward according to his own labour.

John 4:39 And many of the Samaritans of that city believed on him for the saying of the woman, which testified, He told me all that ever I did.

Jesus sowed the word first. Jesus told her all that she ever did, yet he received her with love and gentleness. The Samaritan woman shared his word and there was a harvest of souls. The disciples probably baptized the new converts, they had a part in the harvest of souls.

John 4:40 So when the Samaritans were come unto him, they besought him that he would tarry with them: and he abode there two days.

They received teaching from the Living Word, for two days. He was not welcome in Jerusalem because the religious leaders were seeking to find fault with him.

John 4:41 And many more believed because of his own word;
John 4:42 And said unto the woman, Now we believe, not because of thy saying: for we have heard him ourselves, and know that this is indeed the Christ, the Saviour of the world.

They heard the word from the Master. Never are our words enough. We must share the eternal living word. We cannot save anyone. It is the work of God.

John 1:13 Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

John 4:43 Now after two days he departed thence, and went into Galilee.
John 4:44 For Jesus himself testified, that a prophet hath no honour in his own country.

Mat 13:57 And they were offended in him. But Jesus said unto them, A prophet is not without honour, save in his own country, and in his own house.
Mat 13:58 And he did not many mighty works there because of their unbelief.

His home town people had a picture of who Jesus was, but it was not a true picture. They did not see him as the Son of God, the savior of his people.

John 4:45 Then when he was come into Galilee, the Galilaeans received him, having seen all the things that he did at Jerusalem at the feast: for they also went unto the feast.

He ministered openly receiving all who came to him. He healed and spoke the word of God with authority. All knew this man from God, but not all would receive him. He was a threat to the religious leaders. What things were recorded by John at the time of the feast of Pentecost?

He cleansed the temple of money changers and animals.

John 2:16 And said unto them that sold doves, Take these things hence; make not my Father's house an house of merchandise.

He spoke of his death and restoration. The Jews thought he was speaking of the temple building, but he spoke of his body.

John 2:19 Jesus answered and said unto them, Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.

There were undisclosed miracles in Jerusalem.

John 2:23 Now when he was in Jerusalem at the passover, in the feast day, many believed in his name, when they saw the miracles which he did.
John 2:24 But Jesus did not commit himself unto them, because he knew all men,

Jesus performs a second sign in Cana.

John 4:46 So Jesus came again into Cana of Galilee, where he made the water wine. And there was a certain nobleman, whose son was sick at Capernaum.
John 4:47 When he heard that Jesus was come out of Judaea into Galilee, he went unto him, and besought him that he would come down, and heal his son: for he was at the point of death.
John 4:48 Then said Jesus unto him, Except ye see signs and wonders, ye will not believe.

The nobleman came to Jesus perhaps as a last resort. He earnestly and anxiously pleaded with him to come to heal his son who was near death. Apparently he was not of faith, for Jesus said you must see signs and wonders to believe. This sounds to me like the man was skeptical, but willing to try anything to heal his son. He was a nobleman, a man of wealth. No doubt he had spent money on doctors first and Jesus was his last choice.

John 4:49 The nobleman saith unto him, Sir, come down ere my child die.
John 4:50 Jesus saith unto him, Go thy way; thy son liveth. And the man believed the word that Jesus had spoken unto him, and he went his way.

Jesus only spoke and the child was healed. Jesus the Living Word, who spoke the world's into existence, need only speak and his will be done. Another thing seemed to be needed, faith. The man believed Jesus. Jesus did not go to the boy and give him a remedy, he just spoke the word and it was done. The father believed him and the boy was healed. He healed all who came to him in faith. How many miracles go unnoticed or are not told, because of unbelief?

Lam 3:22 It is of the LORD'S mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not.

John 4:51 And as he was now going down, his servants met him, and told him, saying, Thy son liveth.
John 4:52 Then inquired he of them the hour when he began to amend. And they said unto him, Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him.
John 4:53 So the father knew that it was at the same hour, in the which Jesus said unto him, Thy son liveth: and himself believed, and his whole house.

The servant confirmed that his son was healed at the exact time that Jesus spoke healing. There is power in God's word. The result was that salvation came to the nobleman and to his household. They believed because of the miracle. There was a more noble people; the despised Samaritans, for they believed Jesus because of his word.

The more noble people are those who receive the word and search the scriptures, such as the Bereans in Pauls ministry.

Acts 17:10 And the brethren immediately sent away Paul and Silas by night unto Berea: who coming thither went into the synagogue of the Jews.
Acts 17:11 These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.
Acts 17:12 Therefore many of them believed; also of honourable women which were Greeks, and of men, not a few.

John 4:54 This is again the second miracle that Jesus did, when he was come out of Judaea into Galilee.

The Jews required a sign. They were a visual people. Show me, or I will not believe. It is more noble to believe God at his word, through faith. Must we test God? Testing and tempting are much alike. We may test God but God is not tempted.

Mat 4:7 Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.

This was a response to the devil who tried to manipulate God the Son into proving himself by doing satan's bidding. Those who will not receive God's word are rejecting the mind and will of God. Show me God? Look around at the wonder of his creation. We are not to blame God for every hard thing or evil thing that is in the world. This is the result of sin. God is without sin. All things will be accounted for at the judgment.

Rom 1:16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.
Rom 1:17 For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.
Rom 1:18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness;
Rom 1:19 Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath showed it unto them.
Rom 1:20 For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:

We believe God's word by faith.
