Mile A Minute Baby Afghan

Afghan is made in strips which are then joined together. A border is crocheted around the entire afghan after assembly.

Afghan Size: Approximately 36” x 36”

Materials Needed:
Worsted weight yarn in three contrasting colors.
Color A – Deborah Norville Everyday Soft Worsted “Flashback” 3.5 oz. (5 skeins)
Color B – Hobby Lobby “I Love This Yarn” White (One skein)
Color C – Hobby Lobby “I Love This Yarn: Light Orange (Two skeins)
Size H Crochet Hook
Yarn Needle

Gauge: 6 completed rows of Strip 1 = 4.75 inches

Stitches Used:
Double Crochet - DC
Half Double Crochet – HDC
Front Post Double Crochet – FPDC: Yarn over, insert hook around stitch indicated in row below. Draw up loop, draw hook through two loops. Yarn over, draw through two loops.
Front Post Half Double Crochet – FPHDC: Yarn over, insert hook around stitch indicated in row below. Draw up loop, draw hook through all three loops.
Decrease Front Post Double Crochet Cluster – DFPDCC: Yarn over, insert hook around FPHDC in row below, draw up loop, draw hook through two loops. Yarn over, insert hook in next chain 1 space, draw up loop, draw hook through two loops. Yarn over, insert hook around next FPHDC in row below, draw up loop, draw hook through two loops. Yarn over once more and draw hook through remaining four loops on hook.
Split FPHDC - Yarn over, insert hook around next FHPDC (twice). Yarn over and draw up through all loops.

Strip 1: Make 9

Beginning Shell Row (Counts as rows 1 and 2): With Color A, chain 4, slipstitch in first chain to form a ring. Chain 3 (Beginning DC), 2 DC in ring. (Chain 3, 3 DC) twice in ring. Chain 5, 3 DC in ring, chain 3, join with slip stitch to Beginning DC. Do not turn. Please note! You are making a CHAIN 5 in this step, so read carefully! See Figure 1 for reference. When you continue on to the next row, position your work so that the chain 5 is at the bottom. This will be the ‘end’ of the strip. Row 3: Chain 3, turn. Skipping first 3 DC’s of Row 2, 3 DC, chain 3, 3 DC in center chain 3 space. DC in top of first chain 3 space at end of Row 1.

Row 4: Chain 3, turn. Skipping first 3 DC’s, 3 DC, chain 3, 3 DC in chain 3 space of previous row. DC in top of turning chain of previous row. Repeat Row 4 until you have 43 Rows.

Please note! On this last row you are CHAINING 5 in between sets of DC’s made! See Figure 3. Fasten off and weave in loose ends. 44 rows.

Strip Border Round 1: You will be working along the sides and around the ends of the strip. With Color B, join with HDC in second DC of last Row made. See Figure 4. Chain 1, HDC in same stitch. Front Post HDC around next DC. *HDC, chain 1, HDC in next turning chain. FPHDC around JOINING made by next row*. Repeat from * to * until you reach the last 3 DC grouping on the strip. FPHDC around next DC of previous row. HDC, chain 1, HDC in next DC, FPHDC around next DC.

Now you will begin working in the Chain 5 space at the end of the strip as follows – HDC, ch 1, 3 HDC, ch 1, 3 HDC, ch 1, HDC, all in the Chain 5 space. FPHDC around next DC of previous row. HDC, chain 1, HDC in next DC, FPHDC around next DC. Repeat from * to * until you reach the last 3 DC grouping on the strip. FPHDC around next DC of previous row. HDC, chain 1, HDC in next DC, FPHDC around next DC. Now you will begin working in the Chain 5 space at the OTHER end of the strip as follows – HDC, ch 1, 3 HDC, ch 1, 3 HDC, ch 1, HDC, all in the Chain 5 space. FPHDC around next DC. Join with slip stitch to beginning HDC and fasten off. Weave in loose ends.

Strip Border Round 2: Working along side of Strip. With Color C, join with DC in chain 1 space that is between Row 1 and 2 of Strip 1. 5 DC in same stitch.

*Work Decrease Front Post Double Crochet in next three stitches indicated. 6 DC’s in next chain 1 space. * Repeat from * to * until you reach the last FPDC of previous round that falls in the last DC of the grouping on that side. FPDC.

Working around end of Strip. *4 DC’s in next chain 1 space. FPDC around 2nd of 3 next HDC’s*. Repeat from * to *once. 4 DC’s in next chain 1 space. FPDC around FPHDC of previous row.

Repeat from * to * as stated in Working along side of Strip until you reach the last FPDC of previous round that falls in the last DC of the grouping on that side. FPDC.

Repeat from * to * as stated in Working around end of Strip. FPDC around FHPDC of previous row. Join with slip stitch to beginning DC and fasten off.

Strip Border Round 3: Working along side of Strip. With Color A, joing with HDC in DC after FPDC on previous row. See Figure 9. HDC in next 5 DC’s. *FPHDC around DFPDCC on previous row See Figure 9.2. HDC in next 6 DC’s.* Repeat from * to * until you reach the last FPDC on this side. (FPHDC around FPDC, HCD in next 4 DC’s, FPHDC around FDC, 3 times). HDC in next 6 DC’s. Repeat from * to * until you reach the last FPDC on this side. Repeat from ( to ). HDC in next 6 DC’s. Join with slip stitch to beginning HDC. Fasten off.

Joining: Place two strips with right sides facing. Tip: You can use large safety pins to secure sides together to keep your place. Starting at first group of 6 HDC, whip stitch with yarn needle and approximately 5 feet of Color A through two back loops of each piece. Continue along sides until the end of the strip, ending with last HDC in 6 HDC grouping. Join other strips in the same manner until you have joined all strips.

Afghan Border: Using Color B, join with HDC in any HDC along side of afghan. HDC in each HDC stitch, FPHDC in each FPHDC around to end of first strip. (In the three groupings of 4 HDC’s of previous row, work *HDC, chain 1, in each of first 3 HDC’s. HDC in fourth HDC. FPHDC around next FPHDC*. Repeat from * to * twice more, EXCEPT - This will bring you to the joining “V” of the first and second strips. Work Split FPHDC around the next two FPHDC.) Repeat from ( to ) along end of each strip until you have worked around the end of the last strip. Continue working along next side as you did at the beginning of this border row. When you reach the opposite end, work as in ( to ). Work along remaining side until you reach the beginning HDC. Join with slip stitch to beginning HDC. Fasten off. Weave in ends.
