Here is the USS Stack anchored at HaHa Shima near Iwo Jima for Occupation duty in late 1945

.

The USS Stack was a Benham DD Class Destroyer that could go up to 38.5 knots (44.3 mph for all you landlubbers out there).  Dad recalled at war's end it was only able to get into the high 20's which I think I still great for a ship built in 1938 and was 1,637 tons displacement.

Here are several links with text and photographs.  The last I checked they are still up and running on the World Wide Web. They are as follows:                              http://www.navsource.org/Naval/Register/DD/helpers/dd06txt.htm http://www.sunsite.unc.edu/hyperwar/USN/ships/DD/DD-406_Stack.html http://204.34.153.14/History/STACK.HTM                              http://www.plateau.net/usndd/classbenham.html                                                                  http://www.cityscope.net/~pry/images/dd17.htm#DD-406       http://www.nopuko.com/history/truksurrender.html
