The Humans of Karameikos

This describes the humans of Karameikos for use within Dungeons & Dragons, 3rd Edition and Mystara campaign. A lot of this material is from GAZ1: The Grand Duchy of Karameikos (GDK) by Aaron Allston, B10: Night's Dark Terror, and online material from ???.

-Joaquin Menchaca

There are two major groups of humans within Karameikos, the conquering overconfident deceitful Thyatians and the passionate superstitous indigenous Traladaran that make up 70% of the gentry. There two other minority groups, which are the lost tribe and the gypsie-like Darine.

Majority Groups

There are two main clans within Karameikos: Vyalia clan and the Calarii clan. The elves of the Vyalia clan often call themselves Vishanii, rather than Vyalians. Humans refer to them often as Vyalians, and the Vishanii are quick to correct this.

Darine

The darine are a nomadic population that left Karameikos long before the Beastmen invasion. They have now returned in to Karameikos and roam throughout Karameikos in caravans where they trade goods. These caravans are popular elsewhere, and are espeically popular in the Five Shires, but nowhere to the Darine feel at home except within Karameikos.

Amongst the Darine, they live in different clans that are unique and different, much like the elven clans.

Hattians

The Hattians are a class of Thyatians all to themselves. While the Thyatians are known to be openly intolerent of cultures and civilizations that are deemed inferior to their own, the Hattians take this to the next level as assert their superiority over others, even other Thyatians, whom they consider inferior. The Traladaran do not see any difference between one Thyatian or another, but they will most undoubtedly become a victim of such people, as in the case with Baron Ludwig von Hendriks of the Black Eagle Barony.

Lost Tribe of Traladara

This is a savage tribe that exists within the mountains and have been living in total isolation from the rest of the world. Little is known about this tribe, nor their whereabouts. Their technology is stone implments and primitive iron workings. They practice barbarism and shamanistic rituals.

The New Karameikan

As more couples give birth to mixed race, the distinction between who is Traladaran or Thyatian blurs. The Traladarans that are able to become successful due to the Duke's efforts in building and patrolling the roads, which increase security, trade, and henceforth wealth, start to feel more loyalty towards Duke Stefan. Likewise, some Thyatians may come to an understanding of Traladarans, and may come to enjoy their rich culture and respect them. This new generation of people is referred to as the "New Karameikan". As prosperity comes to the land, this type of patriotism can grow, but as more villainous Thyatians take leadership, this category of the populace will dwindle.

This category can also serve as a generic template for foreigners that are not of Thyatian mainland and adapt into contemporary Karameikan society. Alternatively, the player with the dungeon master can create a new template for another culture, such as a grass-plains nomads, desert nomads, vikings, Celtic, etc.
