A Scene From "Sometimes a HERO" This scene takes place during a skating banquet. Unbeknownst to Cassandra, Jimmy has recently broken a contract with crime boss Arthur Hallam to destroy the skating facility. Jimmy is about to find out that Hallam has a connection with Leon Diaz, Cassandra's abusive stepfather. Jimmy Coy and Cassandra Diaz INT. BANQUET HALL -- NIGHT Cassandra and Jimmy walk into the crowd of skaters.. Cassandra says hello to random individuals as they make their way through the crowd. Getting to their seats, Jimmy stands and smiles. JIMMY What would you like to drink? Cassandra smiles. CASSANDRA A juice. Jimmy nods and heads to the bar. Getting to the bar - Jimmy approaches the bartender with a smile. JIMMY Yeah... two apple juices. Jimmy scans the area - he sees scores of people well dressed, very high class. Jimmy stiffens a bit as he sees Hallam sitting at a table with numerous other people -- including Leon. As the bartender returns with the drinks, Jimmy points to Hallam. JIMMY You know that guy? The bartender looks over. Thinking for a moment - he nods. BARTENDER The guy on the left is Arthur Hallam, he owns the club. Jimmy takes the drinks. JIMMY And the guy on the right? BARTENDER That's one of Hallam's business managers - Leon Diaz. Jimmy takes a sip of one of the drinks. JIMMY Business managers? The bartender nods. BARTENDER Yea... Diaz handles all of Hallam's paperwork -- taxes, expenses, all the boring crap. Jimmy thinks... JIMMY (to himself) This is like a bad dream. Jimmy looks back to the bartender. JIMMY Thanks. Jimmy walks back to the table. Cassandra smiles as Jimmy returns. He sits beside her. Jimmy picks up one of the drinks, as does Cassandra. JIMMY What should we toast? CASSANDRA How about answered prayers? The sound of the glass echoes in their ears. JIMMY If you were praying for someone like me... your expectations are pretty low. CASSANDRA Why would you say that? Jimmy is about to answer, when he notices the bruise on Cassandra's face. He reaches over slowly and caresses the area on her cheek. JIMMY Is that a bruise? Cassandra immediately tries to laugh it off as she pushes his hand away. Jimmy sits back - he looks at his date for a time. JIMMY He threw your mom down the stairs didn't he? Cassandra says nothing. Suddenly a voice interrupts. HALLAM (O.C.) Well hello there. Jimmy stiffens as he recognizes the voice. Cassandra however smiles as she turns to face Hallam. CASSANDRA Mr. Hallam... how are you? Hallam takes Cassandra's hand and kisses it softly. HALLAM Couldn't be better. Hallam's eyes meet Jimmy's. Thousands of very unfriendly words are exchanged in their glances. Hallam extends his hand to Jimmy. HALLAM Arthur Hallam... I own the club. Jimmy shakes his hand. JIMMY Jimmy... Jimmy Coy. HALLAM A pleasure. Have we met before? Jimmy shakes his head. Cassandra stands. CASSANDRA Jimmy, excuse me for a moment, I need to talk to someone. Jimmy smiles as Cassandra makes her way past him. He returns his attention to Hallam who sits down beside him. Arthur Hallam Hallam smiles... trying to keep appearances. HALLAM (low voice) You've got a lot of balls coming here you little bastard! Jimmy smiles back... not wanting to cause a scene. HALLAM I take it she's the reason you changed your mind? Hallam grabs the back of his neck... squeezing tightly. HALLAM I don't think you really thought this plan through... Jimmy squirms slightly, but Hallam increases his grip. HALLAM Sit still boy. You thought it was funny to insult me, turn me down and make a fool of me? Hallam begins to loosen his grip. HALLAM If I were you I'd make sure I dipped my wick in that little honey tonight. Hallam stands... he leans over to Jimmy... his mouth at the young man's ear. HALLAM Go out with a bang. Jimmy is about to respond when Cassandra returns. Hallam turns his attention to her. HALLAM Cassandra my love... be sure to hang on to this young man. Hallam looks back to Jimmy. HALLAM I'm sure he'll change your life. Hallam raises his glass. Cassandra immediately grabs hers and motions to Jimmy to get his. Hallam winks at Jimmy as the three touch glasses and then take a drink. Hallam smiles and then, without a word... makes his way back into the crowd. Cassandra returns her gaze to Jimmy, she smiles.
