This was our last rehearsal before the tour starts. Every little mistake we made, we practiced until it was perfect. As you would think, that would take a whole lotta time and even more time since we going right from the beginning. Intensity was performing the songs first. We were just doing our fourth song, Never Give Up by the Spice Girls, when the Backstreet Boys walked in with Mandy. Nick and Brian also had Mandy and Leighanne. We finished the song and Lindy was ecstatic 'cos we didn't make any mistakes. We went of the stage to greet the boys. Kat and Roxy ran over to their boyfriends and basically crammed a make out session into 30 seconds. Okay, maybe not drastic but you get the idea! Lucy's boyfriend wasn't there 'cos he had to go to work but he had already been to another one of our rehearsals.
After all the kissing and hugging, we were introduced to the Brian and Nick's girlfriends. Brian went first. "Um... Roxy, Lucy, Sky and Kat, this is my girlfriend, Leighanne Wallace. She's gonna be touring with us as well."
"Hi!" She said. "I've heard a lot about you guys! I've also heard your demo tape and you are really good singers!"
"Thanks!" We responded. We thought Leighanne was really nice from first glance.
Nick and Mandy were still kissing. I thought she looked familiar but couldn't quite put my mind on it when suddenly Kevin went, "Ahem! Nick, don't you wanna introduce Mandy?"
"Uh yeah! Um... guys this is Mandy Fontane!"
Then I remembered. She was Mandy from our year in high school. Mandy, one of the most popular girls in school and also one of the ditziest blondes, she used people to get to the top. She had broken quite a lot of guys' hearts and was known for it in high school. I whispered this to Lucy, "Oh my god! That's Mandy Fontane from high school. You know, the ditzy blond cheerleader who used to use people!"
"Oh my god! That is her! Oh know, what if she's just using Nick?"
"That's what I'm afraid of!" We were interrupted by Mandy, with her annoying high pitched whine.
"Hi guys! Wow, I'm gonna be like, touring with like, everyone! Like, oh my god!"
I decided to tell her we knew her since she didn't at all recognize us. "Wow! That really is you! Mandy Fontane, from high school! Remember us, Sky and Lucy?" In actual fact, I had got a lead role in a school play instead of her, so she made the rest of that year hell for me. Lucy also beat her at a singing competition and Mandy also made life hell for her.
"Oh yeah like, I think I do! That's right, you were like, in that school play and Lucy was like, in that singing contest!" Roxy and Kat also seemed to have remembered who she was. Some nights, we would have ran home crying, because of Mandy and her 'popular' gang. Roxy and Kat didn't like Mandy one bit either.
"Yeah! We were in the same year!"
"Yeah, high school was just like, so cool! So, now you guys are in like, a group like, called Density, I think? I saw like, your CD in the shops or something!" I looked over at Lucy who seemed to be furious, remembering high school, and having Mandy call us 'Density' wasn't exactly good.
"Actually, Mandy, we're called Intensity!"
"Yeah," Lucy piped in icily. "And we haven't released a CD yet!"
"Then how come your like, on as the like, opening act?"
Lucy looked like she could punch her so I tried to remain calm, even though I wasn't too happy myself. "Well, why don't you ask the boys that? They chose us!" Kevin could basically see the tension so he tried to keep things calm to stop any fights. "Uh, we chose them 'cos they had a lot of talent and they're really good singers! Look, why don't we let Intensity get back to rehearsing?"
"Fine like, by me! I wanna like, hear some of their music anyway!"
On the way back to the stage, Nick stopped me. Surprisingly, Mandy wasn't attached to his arm but she was flirting with one of the technicians and Nick didn't see. "Why don't you guys like Mandy?"
"Well, let's just say we weren't that close in high school."
"I saw that! Can't you guys be friends? She's coming with us on tour, you know!"
"Look, Lucy and I can never be friends with her!"
"Why not?"
"You don't wanna know!"
"Come on, tell me!"
"Fine! In the last year of high school, I beat Mandy and got a lead role in a school play while Lucy beat her at a singing competition. She made the rest of the year hell for us."
"But Sky! That was in high school! You're past that now! Can't you try?"
"No, I can't. You wanna know another reason I don't like her?" I didn't wait for an answer. "She uses people Nick! She uses people to get to the top. She wasn't popular at first but she used people. Do you know how much boys' hearts she broke? Look, I don't care if you believe me or not, but believe this, I can never be friends with someone like her!" With that, I ran onto stage, close to tears. And just my luck, the next song we were doing was Another Day, and Lucy and I had lead vocals. Lucy had the first verse but since she was still half upset and half angry, she wasn't doing that well at all. "Lucy! What are you doing?" Lindy yelled at her. "We have a concert tomorrow! Get yourself together!"
That just made her more upset and I could tell she was gonna cry soon so I spoke up. "Um, Lindy? Can I just have a talk to her for a minute?"
"Okay, fine. Just hurry up!"
I went over to Lucy who was looking kinda upset. "What's wrong, Lucy?"
"Well, you know high school! I thought I could get away from it all but then we have to meet Mandy again and it's just so annoying!"
"Well, it's al over now! We gotta show Mandy that we are better than her and we have way more talent. If she sees us like this not being able to sing, she'll be gloating for the rest of her life! Come on Lucy!"
"You're right, Sky! We'll show her!"
We hopped up and the change was showing. Intensity finished
the last two songs and if I do say so myself, that was one of our best
rehearsals.
