Cradle of Thorns has been signed to the label Triple X Records since the early '90's. Their first release, Feed Us, in 1994 was well received by the press, and was featured in Alternative Press, B-Side, Ban and Live Wire, and they had some very positive reviews in Rip,Boston Rock, and CMG.
Their second and final release as Cradle of Thorns was Download This. Cradle of Thorns recorded Download This in a privately-owned studio for three months in Bakersfield. The end result was an 18-song journey through the concepts and moods of the band, from satirical to heartfelt, politically incorrect, wryly humorous and devilishly mean spirited lyrics. Musically, tracks such as "Picture Perfect" and "Cocaine 4 Breakfast", which showcase Ty Elam's expressive vocal range, to the personal 'road tapes' like "Utah Flesh". Maddening loops are sampled in such songs as "Chant of the Goat Face Tribe" to the surprising update of Motley Crue's "Shout at the Devil."
About a year ago, they changed their name from Cradle of Thorns to Videodrone, signed onto KoRn's Elementree Records, got a new producer, Reginald "Fieldy" Arvizu or KoRn, and have gone for a completely different sound. BTW- they got the name Videodrone from an old sci-fi movie "Videodrome" and they made the "m" an "n", hence VIDEODRONE
Videodrone's new sound is a slightly new-age sound, with a bit of techno, but still has elements of mainstream rock and alternative.
"We put more thought into this album than any other we've done," comments Kris, Videodrone's drummer. "We really concentrated on each song, trying out a lot of different ideas until we came up with directions that really worked, the whole process brought out new things in each of us. It's like we became a whole different band."
Meanwhile, Ty's made some personal changes. Ty has moved back to Bakersfield after living in Huntington Beach for a few years with his new wife (whom he married on May 8th, 1999) and their 7 month old daughter. The rest of Videodrone still lives in L.A. Therefore, Ty drives down there to practice often.
"It's hard (commuting), but it's also cool" living in Bakersfield, he said. "I'll get gas somewhere, and someone will recognize me. I'll see people from high school. It feels good to be somewhat doing well. For so long, when I was living there, I was struggling to get to that point," Ty commented.
