How to make a collar for a cat
What you will need:
- velvet or other cording, cut to the length of the cat collar plus about 2". Most cats fit 8" to 12" depending on their size. To find the size, measure the cat's neck and add enough room to fit two fingers into the collar. This will ensure that the collar will not choke the cat and that it will not fall off.
- a buckle. You can use the type that they use on the collars in the petstore (may be found at a craft/fabric store, or you can buy a cheap collar and cut the buckle off and use it). Or you can find a fancy one that is more to your tastes, like a rose, or a cross, but they may be difficult to find.
- some decorative items, such as roses, skulls, or crosses, that may be hung or sewn on the collar.
- thread and a needle.
How to make it
Sew the buckle to the cording, by looping the cording into the buckle and sewing down the excess on the backside. This is where the extra couple of inches will disappear to. Sew the unattached end shut so that the inside of the cording doesn't show, and the raw end is closed.
Since you probably don't want to put a series of holes in the cord, make one hole where the pin on the buckle will go through, and where the collar will fit the cat with two fingers in it. Be sure it will close straight or the collar may come loose on a regular basis.
Sew on any decorations. Be sure to sew them on tight and that the cat will not choke on them or be able to pull them off. Also make sure the buckle and the decorations don't rub the cat's skin and cause irritation.
Place on cat and secure.
