7     Albert C. Jickling (1862-1934)

Albert [Bert] was born on 14 Aug 1862 to Robert and Julia Jickling.  He married Hattie E. Mason (1867-1956) on 1 May 1888. Hattie was born on 27 June 1867 to Lee and Rhoda Mason in Galesburg. Lee Mason had served in the Civil War and was postmaster of Comstock for many years. In 1890 Bert was a foreman for the Dewing Manufacturing Company at 115 E. Kalamazoo. The family lived nearby at 204 E. Kalamazoo.

In the 1900 census, Albert, age 37, was the head of the household which included Hattie E. 32, Lee 11, Clare 5, Howard -- his brother 26, Belle -- his sister-in-law 23, and Lizzie Hipp 23, a boarder.

Later Bert worked for the North and Coon Lumber Company and from 1926 until his death he operated his own lumber yard in Comstock. He was a member of the Masons. Bert and Hattie lived at 1216 East Avenue in Kalamazoo from 1902-06. From 1908-1919 they were at 607 South Rose. In 1926 they were at 606 Academy Street and after 1931 at 708 South Park St. Bert built the 708 South Park Street house which his grandchildren remember well. It still stands a few blocks south of Bronson park in the center of Kalamazoo.

Bert died on 24 Feb 1934 and was buried at the family plot in Riverside Cemetery. His widow Hattie continued to live on South Park Street in the 1930s. She was active in the Eastern Star and the Twentieth Century Club. In the 1940s she moved to an apartment in the Marlborough Apartments in South Street. She died on 22 Aug 1956 and was buried beside Bert.

Bert and Hattie had two sons, Robert Lee and Clare Mason.

7-1     Robert Lee Jickling (1889-1970)

Robert [or Lee as he preferred to be called] was born 19 Apr 1889 in Kalamazoo to Bert and Hattie Mason Jickling. He graduated from the University of Michigan and worked as a research chemist, in insurance sales, and later in water treatment.

He married Margaret Catherine Metz (1895-1983) in Detroit on 27 Jun 1916. They lived in Syracuse, NY; Milwaukee, WI; Chester, PA; Hamburg, NY; Battle Creek, MI; the "Forty Acres" farm north of Augusta, MI (where they retired in 1954); and Chicago, IL.

They had four children: Jane, Betty, Bob and David. Lee died at "Forty Acres" on 24 Apr 1970 and his ashes were buried at Riverside Cemetery, Kalamazoo. His widow Margaret died at Berrien Springs MI on 13 Dec 1983. Her ashes were buried beside his.

7-1-1     Rhoda Jane Jickling (1919-1991)

Jane was born in Milwaukee, WI on 9 Feb 1919 to Lee and Margaret Metz Jickling. She graduated from Kalamazoo Central High School in 1936 and worked for the Upjohn Company beginning in 1941. She married Preston D. Carter (1914-1979) at the First Presbyterian Church in Kalamazoo on 20 Jan 1951. They lived in Parchment, MI where Pres Carter worked for the Kalamazoo Vegetable Parchment Co. Later they moved to the Philadelphia area where he worked for Scott Paper Co.

They had one daughter Celinda Lee Carter (living). Pres Carter died on 28 May 1979 in a garden tractor accident. Jane died in Media, PA on 28 Mar 1991.

7-1-2     Esther Elizabeth Jickling (1921-1965)

Esther Elizabeth [or Betty as she preferred] was born in Chester, PA on 14 Mar 1921 to Lee and Margaret Jickling. She grew up in Battle Creek, MI and graduated from Kalamazoo Central High School. She attended Central Michigan University for a short time before marrying L. Fred Hire (living).

They had two children, Margaret and Fred. Betty died of cancer on 14 Mar 1965, her 44th birthday, and was buried at the Saranac, MI cemetery.  Fred remarried Jeanne Downey (living).

7-2     Clare Mason Jickling (1894-1968)

Clare Jickling was born in Kalamazoo on 16 Nov 1894, the second son of Albert C. and Hattie Mason Jickling. He attended Kalamazoo College and the University of Michigan before serving in the Army Air Corps in World War I. He married Norma Carland (1895-1986) in Kalamazoo on 4 Sep 1920. They lived in the Detroit area where he worked in advertising. He established his own firm in 1931, which became Wolfe-Jickling-Dow. They had three children: John, Ellen and Amy. Clare died 15 Nov 1968 and Norma died on 25 Oct 1986.
