QUESTION:
Why do guys' bodies shake when they pee?
DR. DREW:
At the conclusion of urination, sometimes there can be a reflexive impulse
from the autonomic nervous system, which can cause some chilling and
slowing of the heart rate. Occasionally, it can even cause someone to pass
out, a phenomenon called postmicturition syncope. Women can also
experience this to some extent, although men are probably more prone to it
because of their standing position when urinating.
QUESTION:
I may just be paranoid, but I think my hair has been thinning, and I think
it may be because I'm on the pill. The package insert says that scalp hair
loss is a possible side effect. Is there anything I can do to stop it from
progressing without compromising my birth control?
DR. DREW:
Hair thinning is definitely a potential side effect of the contraceptive
pill. I would strongly urge you to talk to your doctor about perhaps
changing pills. There are many oral contraceptives available, so there is
no reason you should have to tolerate this side effect. Once again, you
should consult with your doctor before making any changes to your birth
control methods.
QUESTION:
Can masturbating daily with a vibrator lessen sensitivity over time? If
so, does it return with less use? Also, can the vibrator cause problems
with my fingers, such as arthritis?
DR. DREW:
Using a vibrator cannot cause arthritis, but prolonged use can lessen
sensitivity over time. However, the sensitivity will return with less use.
QUESTION:
I'm considering getting my eyebrow pierced. Do you think it is safe?
DR. DREW:
In general, this is a safe procedure. However, the eyebrow and belly
button are the two most likely places to "reject" a piercing. The
piercing
may turn into a crusty, red, oozing sore (that is, an infection), so be
sure to keep this area clean. Quite frankly, I'm surprised there aren't
more complications from piercing. A foreign body in the body's soft tissue
is a serious matter, and yet we don't see many problems associated with
these piercings.
