HAPPY 2000 FROM DR. DREW AND DRDREW.COM
**********************************************************************

Dear Member,

Happy New Year! Now that all the anticipation is over, we all have time
to reflect back on our lives again. Where are you at mentally,
spiritually, and emotionally? I see each new year, and especially this one, as a
time to refocus and reconnect with ourselves and those close to us. This is
a great opportunity to discard old habits and consider activities and
behaviors that bring us closer to a truer sense of ourselves and real
meaning to our lives.

Best wishes for a healthy new year in your relationships, with your
families and with yourselves.

Stay Well,

Dr. Drew

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
******************************************

QUESTION:
My friend told me that getting "fingered" can take away some of the
pain of intercourse if you are a virgin. Is this true?

DR. DREW:
I know this is irrelevant, but I sure do wish there were some other way
to describe this activity. To answer your question, yes, if your hymen
membrane--the thin membrane that partially covers the vaginal
opening--is ruptured from getting fingered then it could potentially decrease the
amount of pain you experience when you have sex for the first time.
Rupturing the hymen is what causes the pain or discomfort. But your
hymen can be broken several ways--from using tampons or a gynecological exam
to horseback riding or some other physical activity. However, "fingering"
doesn't always completely break the hymen, so you may still feel pain
if part of the hymen is still intact when you have intercourse the first
time. Also, not all women experience pain or blood when their hymen is
broken, and some women aren't born with hymens. The bottom line is, if
you're really worried about the pain of losing your virginity, you're
probably not ready to lose it. Wait until you're comfortable with
yourself *and* your partner.

QUESTION:
I am 28 years old and losing my hair (baldness runs in my family). Ive
considered using one of the hair-loss products currently on the market,
but Im concerned about sexual side effects. Any advice?

DR. DREW:
These products routinely contain a very mild antiandrogen, a substance
that blocks some of the effects of the male sex hormones. In a small
percentage of men, this class of drug has been associated with sexual
dysfunction, such as less desire for sex, difficulty achieving an
erection and a decrease in the amount of semen. But the fact is, so far studies
have shown that long-term use can be safe. However, I am a little
uncomfortable recommending it to healthy, young males like you because
I dont really believe in treating a cosmetic problem like hair loss
through the chronic use of a drug. Theres an over-the-counter hair treatment
available to prevent further hair loss, as an option. If these
preventive measures arent successful, there are also very good hair transplant
techniques available. Whatever you do, dont base your sense of
self-worth on the amount of hair you do or dont have. This isnt the end of the
world.

QUESTION:
I've been smoking pot for about three years (I'm 18). Can pot make you
feel depressed?

DR. DREW:
Absolutely. Sooner or later, almost anyone who smokes pot on a daily
basis will develop a blunted or dulled ability to engage in actions and
perform at work, and ultimately become depressed. The worst part about this
depression is that it will probably get worse for up to six months
after you stop using marijuana. Yet for some reason our culture has refused
to accept the known dangers and side effects of this drug for people who
smoke it chronically. It is an extremely addictive drug for some
people. Depression is almost inevitable for these people, and many will
increase the dose or potency of the marijuana to offset the depression, which
only worsens the problem. They slip further into depression and either end
up in treatment or, more likely, switch to speed or alcohol. There are
very serious mental and physical consequences to abusing this drug, so don't
be fooled into thinking that pot is harmless. If you think you need help
or want to talk to someone about your situation and what you can do,
contact Marijuana Anonymous.

QUESTION:
How long do you have to wait before a home pregnancy test will detect a
pregnancy?

DR. DREW:
These tests are extremely accurate, and it would take approximately 17
to 20 days after sexual contact for a pregnancy to be detected. Some newer
tests are more sensitive and can detect a pregnancy sooner.
