QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
******************************************

QUESTION:
I was recently diagnosed with HPV (human papilloma virus). If I have the
warts removed, will I still be contagious? If so, how do I reduce the risk
of giving the virus to my boyfriend?

DR. DREW:
The fact is, if you had unprotected sex with your boyfriend after you
contracted HPV, chances are he already has them. HPV is highly contagious.
If you're trying to prevent future partners from contracting HPV from you,
having the warts removed would reduce the risk, but there will always be a
slight risk involved because once you have the virus, you'll carry it for
life. Your partner must wear a condom during every single sexual encounter
that involves genital-to-genital contact. Even if the warts have been
removed, and you've taken all the necessary precautions, you can still be
contagious, and you run the risk of transmission.

Another reason to have the warts removed? They tend to spread very easily.
Left untreated, you're at an increased risk for cervical cancer, and if
they get out of the vagina and spread to the anal area, your risk of anal
cancer is also higher.

QUESTION:
How long after a woman stops taking the pill can she get pregnant? Also,
can a woman be pregnant but still have her period?

DR. DREW:
Technically, a woman can get pregnant the day after she missed or stopped
taking a pill. Used properly, the pill provides 24-hour contraception.
Another pill must be taken the following day, at the same time, in order
to maximize its effectiveness. And yes, a woman can bleed while she's
pregnant, but the blood isn't from her period. It's called first-trimester
bleeding. Be sure to have a pregnancy test. It's very important for any
woman who suspects that she may be pregnant to get a pregnancy test done.

QUESTION:
I am a 15-year-old male. For the last month, I have had no sex drive at
all, have problems getting aroused and almost no sexual thoughts--so I
can't masturbate. The only erections I have are in the morning. I'm a
little scared because I've gone from masturbating more than two times a
day to not being able to do it at all. I'm not on any medication, but I
have been playing over four hours of sports per day. Could sports be the
problem?

DR. DREW:
Yes, I suspect it is. Although athletic activity initially causes a rise
in testosterone levels, overdoing it can result in a rather dramatic
decrease in testosterone, which would explain the drop in sexual desire.
This abrupt change in your sexual functioning could easily be caused by
excessive activity, fatigue, depression and/or sleep deprivation. However,
there are a variety of other serious problems that can cause a sudden drop
in your sex drive, including an infection or an endocrine disturbance, so
you should definitely talk to your doctor about this.

QUESTION:
I have a great body and I think I'm very pretty, so why does my boyfriend
insist on watching porn? I thought only guys without good-looking
girlfriends were into that stuff! Even though he says he'll stop, it still
hurts my feelings because the fact is, he still wants to watch it.

DR. DREW:
Men have a tendency to do this regardless of how attractive their partner
is. You can blame it on biologymales have a very powerful drive to seek
out multiple partners in order to spread their genes and insure the
species' survival. Or you can blame it on our culture, which is dominated
by the male expression of sexuality that encourages men to look at women
as sexual objects. Regardless of why he's doing this, rest assured that
this is very common, and it has nothing to do with how you look or how he
feels about you. With that said, it's clear to me that you're
uncomfortable with his behavior. It's perfectly reasonable for you to
either (1) insist that he stops watching porn so that you feel comfortable
continuing the relationship or (2) ask that he keeps this behavior
completely private. Or, simply talk to him about it. Tell him how his
behavior makes you feel, and ask him why he enjoys watching porn so much.
Maybe you'll come to a mutual agreement on the matter. If your boyfriend
respects you, he should be willing to compromise.
