QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
******************************************

QUESTION:
I'm a 17-year-old male with a problem. Every time my girlfriend gives me a
"blow job," I get these really sensitive, red bumps on the end of my
penis, and this area hurts when it rubs against my boxers. After a day,
bumps turn into dry skin and slowly disappear. What are these bumps, and
is there something I should do when I get them?

DR. DREW:
Those bumps are probably the result of excessive stimulation. It sounds
like a simple skin irritation. However, if you have herpes and your
girlfriend irritates the skin on your penis, that could cause an outbreak.
I doubt that's what's happening in your case because herpes sores
generally don't disappear after a day or so, and they don't look like dry
skin. The symptoms you're describing don't fit the profile of a sexually
transmitted disease, but there are skin conditions that might cause this.
It's worth talking to your doctor about just to be safe.

QUESTION:
I only have my period every two or three months now, although I used to be
very regular. I am still a virgin and I'm not on any medication, so why
did it change? Can the pill make it regular?

DR. DREW:
There are lots of reasons why a woman's period can become irregular. You
should definitely talk to your doctor because the fact that your period
suddenly became irregular means something is going on. What you're
describing is called oligomenorrhea, which means infrequent and/or light
periods. This can be caused by rapid weight loss (due to dieting,
overexercising, or illness), an eating disorder, such as anorexia or
bulimia, illicit drug use, particularly heroin, polycystic ovarian
syndrome or ovarian cysts. All of these conditions can have serious
repercussions on your overall health if they're not treated, so you must
talk to your doctor about it. Taking birth control pills can regulate your
period. In fact, the pill is often prescribed to treat polycystic ovarian
syndrome and ovarian cysts. Basically, the pill functions by taking over
your body's normal cycling and producing more estrogen than what your
ovaries normally produce. The surge of hormones suppresses ovulation and
in the process, "tells" your body that an egg was not fertilized, so the
lining of your uterus sheds.

QUESTION:
I have these tiny flaps or bags of skin all over my body. I have a few at
the base of my neck, a large one under my right nipple, a couple on my
inner thighs, and several in the area right above my penis. I've never had
any problems with them, so I've never seen a doctor, but they're hurting
my love life. I don't want girls to see these skin badges, and I am
embarrassed to take off my clothes. What are these skin growths, and can I
remove them?

DR. DREW:
It sounds like you're describing skin tags (acrochordons), which are small
growths of skin that develop on the face, neck, armpits and groin region.
Although the exact cause of these growths is unknown, they tend to occur
in areas of the body where there is lots of friction or rubbing between
folds of skin. They also tend to run in the family. Fortunately, they're
not cancerous or harmful to your health, and they're easy to remove. A
doctor can apply liquid nitrogen to "burn" them off, or they can be
surgically removed. Both procedures are simple and relatively painless, so
talk to your doctor about it. There's no reason these insignificant little
growths should keep you from social interaction.

QUESTION:
If I have an undescended testicle, will I get testicular cancer? Will I be
able to have male children?

DR. DREW:
About 2 percent of male infants are born with undescended testes (this
means they stay in the abdomen instead of descending down into the
scrotum). It is true that undescended testicles have a higher risk of
becoming cancerous if they are not removed, or do not descend by the age
of three. Sometimes the testicle will spontaneously descend within the
first year, but obviously that didn't happen in your case. At this point,
removing the testicle may be your only option. Rest assured, removing a
testicle has absolutely no impact on your fertility, or the sex of your
children. Chances are, the testicle isn't functioning properly, anyway.
Taking care of this problem is incredibly important. Please, visit your
doctor or a urologist soon.
