QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
******************************************

Q: I'm 19 years old and dating a Muslim guy. Since I am Christian, we
obviously have a lot of differences. Although we respect each other's
religion, we don't know what will happen when we have kids. We are both
fairly strong in our beliefs and don't know which religion to raise our
children. Who can we go to for advice? Rather than encouraging us to break
up, we want to speak to someone who will be accepting of our situation.
We're getting engaged this summer, but this is a major issue that's really
hindering our relationship.

Dr. Drew: Interfaith marriages are becoming more and more common in this
country, and I know many couples are choosing to expose their children to
two religions. This may be confusing to the kids, and we don't yet really
know the long-term implications of this, but it's certainly an option. I
do think it's important for both of you to discuss this with someone whom
you trust from each religion, and who is willing to guide you through this
dilemma. You should also look into finding interfaith support groups or
counselors who have experience dealing with this situation.

Q: My first and only relationship lasted over a year. Although we were
sexually active, our relationship was kind of dysfunctional. I am about to
engage in a new relationship with a fairly innocent and inexperienced girl
and want to know how to go about telling her about my past relationship?

Dr. Drew: Why do you feel it's necessary to discuss your past relationship
with your present girlfriend? In general, my rule of thumb in these
situations is "More mystery, less history." I understand wanting to be
honest and open with a new partner, but I don't think you need to dredge
up the details of your past relationship unless it has some specific
relevance to your current relationship. Certainly, your sexual history
will be relevant if you contracted a sexually transmitted disease (like
genital herpes) and intend to have sex with your new girlfriend. If this
criteria does not relate to your current situation, then you should look
at your new relationship as a way of starting over with a clean slate. Be
aware of your past, and try not to make the same mistakes, but don't dwell
on it.

Q: I am a 22-year-old female. I have noticed that I discharge blood and
blood clots when I have a bowel movement. I am in no pain when this
happens and other than birth control pills, I'm not taking any other
medication. What is causing this?

Dr. Drew: I don't want to alarm you, but rectal bleeding can be the sign
of a medical emergency. You must see a doctor immediately. At your age,
the most common reason for this would be bleeding hemorrhoids, but there
are many other serious problems that may be causing this. This could be an
inflammation or infection of the bowel, growths in the bowel, or even a
blood-clotting abnormality. Chances are, this is probably just bleeding
hemorrhoids, but again, the only way to know for sure is to see a doctor.

Q: Why do my shoulders make snapping noises? At first, it was just my left
shoulder, but now my right shoulder snaps, too. Should I be concerned?

Dr. Drew: Unless the popping or snapping is causing you pain or limiting
your range of motion, this is probably nothing to be concerned about. The
sound you're describing can likely be from your tendons rubbing together.
I don't recommend that you engage in activities that cause your shoulders
to snap frequently, because this can be very irritating to the tendons.
Although this isn't a big deal, it wouldn't hurt to have a doctor look at
your shoulders to be sure this isn't an inflammation of the joint, a
mechanical misalignment, or tendonitis.
