The Fifth Age
The Chaos War
While the Knights of Takhisis thundered across the surface of Ansalon, the Yaluu empire tightened its hold on the inhabitants of Chorane. The same unnatural heat was that washed across the rest of the planet also struck Chorane, causing the frozen parts of the land to thaw slightly. Water flooded from the upper levels of Chorane down into the middle and lower levels. The raging, flooding water forced many Choranians deeper into Chorane's tunnels, causing a slight problem with the Theiwar.
The first wave of Chaos struck Chorane while the Yaluu were negotiating with the Theiwar over the flooding problem. The Yaluu were totally unprepared as the denizens of chaos rose from the bubbling rivers of lava deep within the earth and attacked from below. Chaos had created a minor gate in the lava below Chorane in order to transport his minions to Krynn. The hordes of Chaos quickly overran the lower levels of Chorane and worked their way up. The Theiwar fought back valiantly, but their forces were quickly decimated and the dark dwarves fled upwards into the lands of their allies. The Yaluu provided stiffer resistance to the hordes of Chaos, but even they could not stop the onslaught. Thousands died from the ravaging choas. Chorane's future looked grim until dragons of every description erupted from their dragonholes and flew to the Choranian's aid. For the first time in the history of Chorane, chromatic dragons flew side by side with the metallic dragons and worked together against the minions of Chaos.
Rallying behind the dragon's example, the Yaluu, with the help of the Ameshites and the Vodar, struck back at the hordes of Chaos. The combined might of the Choranians sent the chaos creatures reeling back down into the lava-drenched lower depths from which they sprang.
The Choranians were on the verge of victory when the bitter feelings that had separated them for centuries once again flared. The Ameshites, with the help of the Vodar, turned against their Yaluu masters in a massive uprising. The Ameshites and the Vodar forced the Yaluu down into the chaos caverns and reclaimed the upper levels of Chorane. The Yaluu, trapped between the hordes of Chaos and their hated enemies, would have surely perished if Chaos had not been banished from the world.
Without the replenishing strength of their Father, the chaos creatures disappeared into the lava-filled caverns below Chorane. The Yaluu held off their enemies and rebuilt their home in the empty lower caverns of Chorane. Eager to start rebuilding their lives also, the Vodar and the Ameshites reluctantly signed a Non-Agression Pact with the Ameshites in the year 2 SC. Unknown to the Ameshites and the Vodar, the Theiwar had survived annihilation at the hands of the forces of chaos and oonce again allied themselves with the Yaluu. Together, they silently plotted agains the Ameshites and the Vodar.
The Discovery of Mysticism
As the Vodar and the Ameshites rebuilt their respective kingdoms, the Ameshites rededicated themselves to Parthenu. The gods had disappeared during the Second Cataclysm, but the Ameshites did not notice. They had lost all clerical magic for centuries, so the passing of the gods did not affect them. When the Ameshites began to worship Parthenu faithfully once more, they discovered that they could not reach the gods in the ways that their ancestors once did. Greatly disturbed, the Ameshites swept through every inch of the land searching for any clue that might help them regain their lost clerical might.
In 7 SC, a renowned Singer by the name of Klysen Darront made a discovery that would change the Ameshite society forever. Despairing over the Ameshite's lack of success, he left his post and traveled through the Ameshite lands. While in a small settlement near Amesh's Rent, he witnessed a young boy being attacked by a lurker. The local militia managed to slay the beast and prevent the boy's death, but the boy had already been faally wounded. Anguished over his inability to aid the boy, Klysen fell to his knees and prayed out desperately to Parthenu. Receiving no answer, Klysen began to question his faith and stopped trying to heal the boy through Parthenu. Instead, he looked into himself and tried to heal the boy himself. The villagers were amazed when the boy's injuries were completely healed. Klysen had discovered the mysticism by drawing upon the power within him.
Rather than concluding that the gods were gone and that mortals needed to rely on themselves, Klysen decided that the gods had given him the power to heal the boy. Klysen's belief was that Parthenu had not answered his prayers before because he had cried out to the god for help instead of trying to remedy the situation himself. Mortals cannot expect the gods to solve all of their problems, Klysen preached. Rather, the gods worked through the people that had a strong enough faith, allowing mortals to take care of themselves.
Mysticism spread like wildfire through the clergy until all of the Singers were introduced to mysticism. Many other spheres were discovered and many Singers became powerful mystics. The Ameshite society flourished in the wake of the new magic. The Ameshites shared the new magic with the Vodar, and soon many mystics appeared within their ranks. Even some of the Kendar picked up mysticisma and helped to heal the broken race.
The Mystic War
However, the Yaluu also learned of mysticism and managed to implant spies in the Ameshite and Vodar realms. Quickly, the Yaluu managed to master all of the available spheres of mysticism, especially the spheres necromancy and spiritualism. The Yaluu used the new magic in order to strengthen its army with undead soldiers.
Complacent in their newfound prosperity, the Ameshites never realized the growing danger beneath their feet. The first wave of undead legions struck the deepest Ameshite outpost in 11 SC. Overrunning the outpost quickly, the Yaluu, and their Theiwar allies, quickly penetrated the Ameshite defenses and struck at their hated enemies. The Vodar quickly intervened and were faced with a series of brutal geurilla attacks by the Theiwar. Once again, war broke out in Chorane.
The Dragon Purge: The Arrival of Glacier
In 17 SC, far north of Chorane and just north of Icewall, two white dragons invadded the land. Cryonisis and Frisindia hunted down the dragons in the area and slaughtered them for their essences. One white dragon, Glaysllenthrax, fled south in the wake of the dragon's onslaught. Tribes of thanoi followed the wyrm's example and also traveled to Chorane. After flying over Ice Wall, Glaysllenthrax discovered the land of Chorane. The war that had enveloped Chorane in the dawn of the Fifth Age had gone on for six terrible years when Glaysllenthrax appeared.
Immediately, the white wyrm challenged several of the native dragons of Chorane. Glaysllenthrax defeated them all and absorbed their magic. The dragon immediately disrupted the Mystic War in Chorane by attacking both sides. The dragons of Chorane, after witnessing Glaysllenthrax's destructive power, retreated back into their dragonholes. Because their numbers had already been depleted by the war and Glaysllenthrax's initial attacks, and because of the distrust between the various dragon clans, the dragons retreated rather than band together and fight back.
Glaysllenthrax quickly created a lair for herself, a massive mountain of ice that soured high above Chorane, and began to shape the land. The Ameshite and Vodar lands were plagued with avalanches, jagged ice, and extreme cold as Glacier, as the humans called him, began transforming the land of Chorane into solid ice.
The newly arrived thanoi immediately swore fealty to Glacier and began to settle in. However, the ursoi were angry at the new arrivals and fought for their land. With the help of Glacier, the thanoi were nearly decimated.
The human and demihuman races of Chorane were too weak and disorganized from the Mystic War to oppose Glacier. Instead, they merely his in their tunnels and avoided the Dragon Overlord's wrath. For years, the inhabitants of Chorane huddled in their caves as their surroundings froze over and turned to ice. For years, Glacier was the undisputed ruler of Chorane, completely unaware of the growing menace beneath his feet.
The Tides of Chaos
In 21 SC, the minions of chaos re-emerged from the caverns below Chorane. With terrible fury, daemon warriors attacked from below, shadow wights closed in from the sides, and fire dragons erupted into the skies. The Kendar were nearly destroyed by the chaos. The few that survived became marked with chaos and forever changed. The Theiwar retreated into their ancient tunnels, called the Darkrealm. Desperate to escape the hordes of chaos, the Theiwar expanded the monster-infested region upward and emerged in upper Chorane. Although treated with mistrust by the Ameshites and the Vodar, the three races eventually worked together against the chaos creatures. The Yaluu took a staunch stand against the minions of chaos and suffered severe casualties. However, they managed to hold off the chaos hordes with their newfound knowledge of mysticism and their stockpile of magic weapons.
Glacier was unprepared for the fire dragons that threatened his domain. His ice tower was quickly shattered and melted by the fire dragons. Glacier fought back, but he could not defeat all of teh fire dragons. Instead, Glacier retreated into the depths of Chorane and met with its inhabitants. He decided that the only way to defeat the hordes of chaos would be to band together. He met with the remaining dragons in Chorane and set up a council, with himself as the head. He forged an alliance with all of the other races of Chorane, including the Ameshites, the Vodar, the Yaluu, the remaining Kendar, the Theiwar, and even the bitter ursoi. With the aid of a Dragon overlord, the inhabitants of Chorane forced the hordes of chaos back down into the lava-drenced caverns below Chorane. There, in the Chaos Realms, did the chaos minions remain after being driven back in 23 SC.
The Discovery of Sorcery
In order to aid the inhabitants of Chorane, Glacier and the other dragons revealed the secrets of sorcery in 21 SC. Sorcery turned the tide in the war and gave the people new power. Sorcerers began to spring up everywhere in Chorane as more would-be mages studied the new Art. Ameshites immediately decreed that sorcery was blasphemous and that it went against the teachings of Parthenu. Mysticism, they believed, was the only true and holy magic. Sorcery was evil magic from dragons. The Vodar and the Yaluu, however, quickly embraced sorcery, as did many Theiwar.
The Orders of Sorcery were quickly established to further strengthen the bond between the powers. The Orders consisted of five orders: White Robes use magic for Good; Red Robes strive for neutrality and balance; Black Robes work magic to strengthen evil in the world; Gray Robes dedicate themselves to the magic, not to any particular philosphy; Blue Robes are servants of the Dragon Council. Although the five orders were supposed to work together for the benefit of all, they secretly plotted against each otehr from the moment they were concieved. Already, the strains of the alliance threatened the shaky peace.
The Present (34 Saer Cataclius)
After the Second Chaos War, Glacier honored his pact with the inhabitants of Chorane. He stopped changing Chorane into an icy wasteland. He stopped his attacks on the inhabitants of Chorane and continued to act as the Head of the Dragon Council.
However, all know that this is all an act. The Chaos Realms still hold the hordes of chaos, and Glacier knows that they would destroy Chorane if he ever turned agaisnt his allies.
In present day Chorane, tensions that have been building for centuries and culminating for a decade flare violently and unpredictable. Glacier schemes away against his allies and struggles to increase his power without jeopardizing his life. The Ameshites have turned their backs on the Vodar and the Yaluu, claiming that sorcery has corrupted them both. The Yaluu are a dying race, frequently being attacked and slaughtered by the frequent attacks of chaos. The Kendar have survived, but they are forever changed. The Theiwar are spread thin throughout Chorane and unable to build up their empire once again. The Ursoi and the Thanoi are nearly on the verge of war over the surface land, but so far Glacier has kept peace. To make things worse, the forces of chaos grow stronger and the Council of Wyrms secretly plots against its leader.
In the Fifth Age, Chorane is a land of mystery and intrigue. All nations are locked in a tentative peace, with no one daring enough to test it. Yet every key player in Chorane has dozens of plots and plans to manuever themselves into power. In this silent power struggle, the fires of war are beginning to light. The chaos beneath them waits patiently for a crack in the alliance.
In this tumultuous period, Chorane needs guidance. Chorane cries out for hope. Chorane calls out for heroes.
