Album Review:

The River was a breakthrough for Springsteen, not so much in terms of music, but in the lyrics and messages.  The message of the River is that of a bleak and solemn outlook on economy ravaged men, women and towns.  Their is a message of hope in the album, and the songs "The River," "Cadillac Ranch," "You Can Look (But You Better Not Touch),"Out In The Street" and the top-10 hit "Hungry Heart" all show messages of hope.  While the songs "The Price You Pay", "Wreck On The Highway" and "Independence Day" have such solemn messages that they add to the Album's message of realism.  This album is about those hard working blue-collared Americans, and those who just haven't caught a break, and how they live, survive and are heroes in others eyes.  This 2 CD set is a period of transition for Springsteen, but it still provides not only quality themes and stories, but above all else, music.
