Generation
One HENDRICK MEESE VROOMAN1born
about 1618 in
Holland, son of Bartholomeus VROOMAN. He
married before
1649
in Holland, but his wife is unknown, and
apparently died in
Holland. Their Children, all born in Holland
were: 1) Adam
b
14 Sep 1649; 2) Eve b ca 1651; 3) Johannes
bapt 15 Feb
1653;
4) Kathlyntje bapt 5 Aug 1657; 5)
Bartholomeus bapt 4 Jun
1659; and 6) Hendrickje bapt 20 mar 1661 prob
dy. Hendrick
came to "New Netherland" in 1664, bringing
his five
children
with him, and settled first "behind
Kinderhook" and
Lansingburg. About 1677 he moved Schenectady.
On 9 Feb
1690,
there was a terrible raid on Schenectady by
the French and
their Indians. Hendrick Meese VROOMAN was
murdered that
night. His son Bartholomuese was also killed,
and his
daughter-in-law Engletje (Blom) VROOMAN and
her infant
daughter. Two grandsons, Barent & Wouter were
carried off
to
Canada and kept captive for several
years. Generation Two ADAM HENDRIKSE
VROOMAN2 was born 14 Sep 1649 in
Holland. He was
the eldest son of Hendrick Meese VROOMAN. His
mother is
unknown. At about the age of fifteen he came
to America
with
his father and four siblings. He became a
Millwright, and
moved to Schenectady, New York in 1677. He
married about
1678 to Engletje BLOM. Adam and Engletje had
six children:
1) Barent b 1679; 2) Wouter b 9 Sep 1680;
3) Peiter b 4 May 1864; 4) Christiana b 18
Oct 1865; 5)
Hendrick b 1687; and 6) an unnamed child b
before Sep 1690.
On 9 Sep 1690 his home was invaded by French
and their
Indians. His father Hendrick, brother
Bartholomeus, wife
Engletje, and infant child were all murdered,
and his sons
Wouter and Barent were carried off and held
in captivity in
Canada until 1697. Adam married again on 18
Nov 1691 to
Grietje (Ryckman) VanSlyck and she must have
died because
on
13 Jan 1697 he married once more to Greitje
Margrietje
Takelse Hemmstraat. The remaining children

Province of New York in 1715. He wrote his
will 12 Sep 1729
and it was proved 13 Jun 1730. His death
occured on 25 Feb
1730. Generation Three WOUTER ADAMSE
VROOMAN3 was born 9 Sep 1680 in
Schenectady, New
York. He was son of Adam Hendrikse VROOMAN &
Engletje BLOM.
When he was ten years old, the French and
Indians attacked
Schenectady and his parents home. He was
taken captive and
taken to Canada, along with his brother
Barent, and it took
seven years before his father could get them
released. His
mother and a baby sister were murdered in
that raid, and so
was his grandfather and an uncle. On
24 Sep 1707 he was married to Marytje
HALLENBECK. Their
family consisted of fifteen children: 1) Adam

1710; 4)
Dorothea bapt 5 Oct 1714; 5) Adam b 3 Feb

VROOMAN4 was baptised on 24 Aug
1717 (exact
birthdate unknown) He was son of Wauter
Adamse VROOMAN &
Marytje HALLENBECK. He married 29 May 1743 to
Rachel VAN
WOERT. Jacob and Rachel had nine children: 1)

1750 Jacob
VROOMAN was one of the deacons of the Dutch
Reformed Church
at Schoharie. The death date of either Jacob
or Rachel is
unknown. Generation Five WOUTER JACOB
VROOMAN5 was baptised 4 Nov 1744
(exact
birthdate
unknown). He was the son of Jacob Wouter
VROOMAN & Rachel
VAN WOERT. He was a Captain during the
Revolutionary War,
and on 23 ocat 1780 at Kanasaroga he was
taken prisoner and
held a captive until 29 Jul 1783. He married
in 1767 at
Schenectady, New York to Jacomyntje BARHEYT.
At the time
Wouter was taken captive they had several of
their
children,
and the family had to struggle while he was
gone. Walter
and
Rachel were the
parents of ten children: 1) Rachel bapt 6 Dec

1786. Walter died 17 Feb 1817 at Altamont,
New York. Generation Six JACOB
VROOMAN/VROMAN6 was born 29 May
1771 at
Schenectady, New York. He was the son of
Walter Jacob
VROOMAN & Jacomyntje BARHEYT. He was called
"Jacob of
Normanskill" It is about this time that his
name began to
appear in records as both VROOMAN & VROMAN
and later
generations used the VROMAN spelling. He
married 12 Jun
1792
at Schenectady to Rebecca EWING. Jacob &
Rebecca had two
children: 1) Adam b 13 Sep 1792; and 2) John
b 11 Sep 1794.
It is not known
where or when Jacob and Rebecca died. Generation Seven ADAM
VROOMAN/VROMAN7 was born 13 Sep
1792 at
Guilderland, New York. He was the son of
Jacob VROMAN &
Rebecca EWING. Adam was baptized 18 Sep 1796
at the
Guilderland Center Dutch Reformed Church.
Sometime between
1820-1822 he moved to Delaware County, Ohio
and lived there
until about 1851. He married before 1820 to
Caroline
ROBERTS
who died in 1841.
Adam & Caroline had these children, all born
in Delaware
County, Ohio: 1) Jane b ca 1829; 2) William
George b 1822;
3) Dorrance b 1825; 4) Martha Delight b ca
1826; 5)
Charlotte b ca 1828; 6) Henry b 30 Sep 1830;
7) David R. b
ca 1831; 8) Horace Eugene b 16 Nov 1833; 9)
Lucius Cissero
b
ca 1835; and 10) Mary Ellen b ca 1837.
Caroline died 26 Mar
1845 in Delaware County, Ohio. He married
again on 12 Feb
1846 in Delaware County, Ohio, and they had
two more
children: 11) James b ca 1847; and Crittenden
B. b 21 Jan
1849. About 1851 they moved to Lee County,
Illinois. Sarah
died, and Adam married again sometime after
1853 to Mrs
Catherine Powell. Adam died in Sep 1871 and
is said to be
buried in the Beam Cemetery in Lehigh,
Webster County, Iowa
cemetery. No tombstone or record has been
found there. I
have never been sure if he lived there or was
traveling
west
to be near his children in Nebraska. Generation Eight WILLIAM GEORGE
VROMAN8 was born about 1822 in
Delaware County,
Ohio. He was the son of Adam VROMAN and
Caroline ROBERTS.
William was first married to Lydia Thurston
on 1 Jan 1845
in
Delaware County, Ohio. They had two children:
1) Phoebe
Caroline b ca 1842; and 2) Elizabeth ca 1843;
Lydia died,
and he married 6 Sep 1849 in Morrow County,
Ohio to
Elizabeth LONG. William and Elizabeth had ten
more
children:
3) Daniel A. b 19 Dec 1851; 4) Lovelet b 22
May 1853; 5)
Norvil b 19 Jun 1856; 6) Edward B. b Sep
1858; 7) Thomas B.
b ca 1859; 8) Ambrose b ca 1863; 9) Catherine
b 7 Mar 1865;
10) Gustavus b ca 1867; 11) Stillman b ca
1872; and 12)
Soloman b ca 1874. According to the census
records, William
was living in Allen County, Ohio in 1850; Lee
County,
Illinois in 1860; and Wayne County, Nebraska
in 1870 &
1880.
He was the first surveyor of Wayne County,
Nebraska.
William
must have died about 1894 in Wayne County,
Nebraska. No stone or record has been found
there, and it
could be that he went to Boyd County,
Nebraska and died
there. Elizabeth died in Boyd County,
Nebraska. Generation Nine CATHERINE
VROMAN9 was born 7 Mar 1865 in Lee
County,
Illinois. She was the daughter of William
George VROMAN &
Elizabeth LONG. She married on 31 Mar 1878 in
Wayne County,
Nebraska to Orrin Elias CHAFFEE. She was a bride at age
thirteen. She
was
always known as "Kate". Orrin &
Kate had four children: 1) Florence May born
1 Sep 1880 NE;
2) Dora Madaline b 8 Mar 1883; 3) Ralph
Crawfore b 3 Jan
1888; and 4) Gladys Theo b Jul 1897. They
lived in Smith
County, Kansas for a
couple of years, and then back to Wayne
County, Nebraska.
About 1890 they moved to Boyd County where
they lived for a
few years before moving to Goshen County,
Wyoming. They
homesteaded there and Orrin died there on 12
Dec 1933 and
Kate died on 6 Oct 1939. They are both buried
in the
cemetery at
Lusk, Wyoming.
