Chapter 6

Shane's View

"Kat? Is that you?"

She smiled and I suddenly noticed the room was cold. "The one and only. I'm here to tell you a few things."

"Good. I was wondering about a few things. First why is the blue ninja communicating only to Brian?"

"Like when it looked at him at his house or how it spoke to him at the arena?"

"Yeah."

"Well before I answer that, just remember it looked at you when Ryan tried out for the sandman."

"But that's it! It hasn't spoken to me!"

"Jealous much? Well, have you tried to talk to it? If you'll remember it was Brian who spoke first. If he hadn't it would've disappeared again."

"Next question. Why did you change your mind and choose Brian? And what did you mean about a void in his heart?"

"Brian has been more sensitive to this because he knew me my whole life and didn't realize it. He's lost me 3 times and he doesn't want to lose me again. That's why every time the blue ninja leaves he has a fit. Since you guys think I'm the blue ninja, it's like losing me one more time for him." She walked over to the side of my bed and sat down. I sat up and looked at her as she looked me in the eye and continued. "Shane, I'm sorry I didn't stay with you. Believe me, if Brian didn't need me so bad I'd still be with you. But that's not how things worked out." I began to notice that she had stopped glowing and that her voice sounded closer and realistic instead of hollow and far away like it had been. I pointed this out to her. "Yeah, I know." And reached out and instead of her had going through me, it touched me in a very real state of matter. She started to stroke my cheek and I put my hand over hers. I started to work it slowly up her arm then down her side and stopped at her waist. She looked up and into my eyes as we brought ourselves closer to each other. When we were just centimeters apart, she leaned in and whispered, "Happy birthday, Shane." Then she kissed me and held it. My tongue found its way into her mouth and she met it with hers. Finally we parted just long enough for her to quickly kiss me again and vanish. I looked at my watch and sure enough the date was July 13th, my birthday, and it was 12:05AM. I had turned 21 during the kiss.

Only 5 minutes into it and it was already the best birthday ever. But there was still something burning in my brain. "Kat, are you still here?"

"Yep." She re-appeared.

"Are you the blue ninja?" She smiled. “That will remain a secret until the time is right. Just don't worry about it right now and everything will be told in its time."

"Okay. I love you, little sister."

"I love you too, big brother." Once again she disappeared but this time I knew she was gone. The room was warm again. That night, I fell asleep with a smile on my face for the first time in a month.
