When Will You Marry?

by Rose Murray

(This article appeared originally as a guest article in Sydney Omarr's Astrological Guide for You for 2001. I would like to share it with those who may have missed it the first time.

Astrological clients always get around to the question sooner or later. Sometimes with eager interest. Sometimes with an offhanded shrug as if it didn't matter at all. At times in desperation.

The truth is if they are single, divorced or widowed--no matter what the age--the odds are pretty heavy a client will ask some version of the following question during a consultation with an astrologer:

"Do you see marriage in my chart this year?"

Any astrologer worth his or her salt will have researched the various ways to answer such a question.

The nice thing is that the stars--or planets--speak rather loudly on this issue when it's about to occur. You just have to know what to look for among the many clues, including the alignment of the Sun, Moon, Venus and Mars in the individual's birth horoscope.

From my research and experience, I can tell you that the stellar influences at the time of marriage look almost fated. I've yet to see anyone's marriage-year chart that didn't contain at least three to ten of the planetary patterns that I call "marriage aspects."

I have seen, however, quite a few charts that contained the requisite number of marriage aspects that didn't bring a wedding, even when one was single, ready and willing. But in those cases, the influences often brought a strong emotional relationship, a new love interest, or a renewal of passion in an existing union.

It Had To Be You

But not only can charts indicate when you will marry, but also the unique type of person you might marry. Nothing makes me speculate more about fate versus free will. Take any married couple you know. Look back at their astrological indications at the time they married.

The startling fact is that not only will both have had three to ten marriage aspects that year, but these aspects will have been actually linked to each other in similar signs and degrees.

The ways they'll have been linked will far exceed the law of averages. Such as one of the pair's progressed Moon (which moves a degree a month around the 360-degree zodiac wheel) will be exactly on the degree of the other's natal Sun at the time of marriage. Or one will have Mars conjunct an angle in the same degree that the other has a Venus/Sun conjunction by progression that year. There will be usually be several of these links.

These marriage links never cease to amaze me. And I'm not a fatalist. I heartily embrace free will. The stars impel but they do not compel, as the old saying goes. Still...

Well, what about those marriages that end in divorce, you may wisely ask. Yes. Those often appear just as destined to take place as the marriages that lasted.

I really can't say if some karmic factor enters the picture that draws one at times to Mr. or Ms. Wrong. It's a metaphysical possibility that some marriages are meant to provide valuable learning and growth experiences.

I'd prefer to think, however, that with a wise use of astrological compatibility rules you can make sure the partner is right when a marriage opportunity arises.

The fact is, astrology has long been successfully used to match persons via signs, elements and planets. Knowledge is power. You don't have to walk blindly down the aisle. If nothing else, you can be aware of potential problem areas in the relationship.

Inherent conflicts may show up between two natal charts in numerous ways. There may be strong indications of passion, for instance, but no promise that the two lovers will even like each other once they get past the honeymoon. Or friendship indications might glow with promise but the romantic prospects be dismal. Either the chemistry is right or not. That's very plain when you know astrology.

Some Quick Ways to Spot a Marriage Year

Often your age at marriage can be found can be found right in your natal chart. It can often be found in the distance in zodiacal degrees between any two of the heavenly bodies symbolic of male and female, love and passion--Sun, Moon, Venus and Mars. Often the number of degrees between two of these "love planets" will equate to your age at a major romance or at marriage.

I should caution that this method doesn't always work.At least, not by itself. You'll need many more calculations that this. You can check out this method for fun in your natal chart and then see if was a marriage year for you in the past, but there are too many other things to look at to count on it for the future.

You can also get a hint or two by looking at various combinations of natal and progressed Sun and Venus. But again, that combination, though often seen at the time of marriage, is not enough alone to take you down the aisle. Next look for the distances between any of the other four "love planets"--Sun, Moon, Venus and Mars. (In astrology, we use the term planets for Sun and Moon for the sake of convenience.) Check out also the distance between any of these four planets and the Ascendant or Midheaven. Each degree of distance will equate roughly to a year of your life.

Take the example of a man whose Sun is at 6 degrees of Virgo and whose Venus is in the following sign at 10 degrees of Libra. He married a little later in life than most men do. He was 34 years old by the time he took a bride.

There are 30 degrees in each sign. With his Sun at 6 degrees of Virgo, there were 24 degrees remaining in Virgo to add to the 10 degrees in Libra to find the distance between his Sun and Venus. The total of 24 and 10 is 34, his age at his first marriage.

This man's second marriage took place at age 55. I happened to predict that marriage when this individual showed me his natal horoscope at a social gathering. I couldn't help noticing that his natal Mars was in his seventh house of marriage. I mentally calculated that at his present age his Sun was about three degrees short of reaching his Mars. That equates to three years.

Since this personable man wasn't married at the time, I felt sure he wouldn't have much problem in finding a second wife. I casually remarked that he might very well marry again in about three years.

What I didn't calculate at the time, however, was that I would be the woman he'd marry.

Here's another instance of a natal chart indicating the age at marriage. Queen Victoria's spouse, Prince Albert, married the queen when he was twenty-one years old. His natal Venus was 21 degrees away from his natal Ascendant.

Actress Jean Harlow's two brief marriages both show plainly in her chart. She had 0 Aries on the cusp of her seventh house of marriage, with Venus at 5 Aries and Moon at 21 Aries. Her first marriage was at age 16, equating to the distance between her Venus and Moon. Her second marriage was at age 21, the distance between the Descendant angle (7th house cusp) and Moon.Another way you can sometimes discover a marriage year with ease is through a glance at an ephemeris. An ephemeris, if you didn't know, is the reference book that astrologers use to locate the position of the planets from day to day.

If you own an ephemeris and know how to read it, you can discover possible marriage dates by looking up the year and date of your birth. Let's say you're 21 years old at the present time.

To discover where your birth planets have moved by progression up to age 21, move your finger down the page, counting one day for each year of life. So if you were born on April 1, you would look for the position of the planets 21 days later on April 22. Here you'll find the progressed planets for your current year os life.

Well, if Venus aligns with Mars, and "the Moon is in the seventh house," or some other romantic combination, you might be in a marriage year.

I often spot potential marriage years in this way, especially when the planetary ruler of the first house (symbolizing you) forms a harmonious relationship with the ruler of your seventh house (indicating a partner.)

One of my favorite stories about this method concerns Fred Astaire and a woman of my acquaintance. She was very young and impressionable in 1979 when she ran into Astaire on the set of a TV production. She talked with him, flirted a little, and developed a crush on this man, who was then old enough to be her grandfather. She was in her twenties, he was about to turn 80.

"What's happening to him astrologically this year?" she asked me, stars in her eyes.

His horoscope was well-known. It was printed in more than one of my reference books. I took a quick look at the chart, mostly to humor her.

Then I opened my ephemeris, found the date of his birth, and looked for his progressed planets at age 80. The ruler of his first house was about to make an exact harmonious aspect to the ruler of his seventh house that year.

I laughed. "He could get married."

I really thought it rather improbable. He'd been single since 1954 when he had been widowed. The last prior marriage indication that this method showed was for 1933, the year he and Phyllis Potter were wed.

Astaire had certainly had many glamorous dancing partners in the years after that and had undoubtedly met countless woman who would have been willing marriage partners. But he had remained single.

I felt the chances were slim of his remarrying at this late date when nearing 80. But a couple of months later, the tabloids began to flash headlines about a youthful woman jockey Astaire had been seen with. He and Robyn Smyth were married not too long after that. The stars had been right.

I like this story because it illustrates so well the fact that age has little to do with finding love and companionship. It doesn't matter either how long one has been single, romance could be waiting right around the next corner.

Attitudes Make A Difference

The power to attract love depends on much more than some lucky planets, however. One's attitude about love and marriage is definitely tied in with the planets and what they symbolize.

So much depends on your birth sign and planets. If your natal chart shows you are extra picky, independent, self-absorbed, or cool in temperament, you may be less likely to succumb to the passionate signals of Venus and Mars.

To discover how your special attitude about love and marriage may be influencing your life, look for your sign below. You'd also be wise to look at the sign of a potential partner to see if this person is likely to be the mate of your dreams.

ARIES (March 21-April 19) - You're a fiery, impetuous lover, often concerned with setting new trends. Your love of a challenge, however, means that you sometimes find the chase more stimulating than the capture. You need to learn to cooperate as well as to compete with a lover. You're at your best when matched with a Leo, Sagittarius, Gemini, or Aquarius.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20) Your easy-going nature makes you a delight to know and your strength, stability, and loyalty are priceless. In romance, you're sensuous and pleasure-loving, but may be slow to make the first move or too unyielding in habit patterns to make room for another. You'll share life most easily with a Virgo, Capricorn, Pisces or Cancer.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20) Witty, clever and sociable, your mental prowess is great. Your variety-loving, flirtatious nature makes you fascinating to be around. But you might put off settling down with just one person, because of your restless need for new experiences. The many sides of your nature will best be appreciated by a Libra, Aquarius, Aries, or Leo.

CANCER (June 21-July 22) Your tender heart and deep emotions make you an ideal candidate for marriage. You thrive on domesticity and love home and family. When you don't marry, it's often because of clinging to a past love or fear of sensitive feelings being hurt. Release the past and start anew, especially with a Scorpio, Pisces, Taurus or Virgo.

LEO (July 23-August 22) You attract members of the opposite sex with ease when you display your warm, generous, entertaining side. Your love of drama frequently puts you in the spotlight. A happy marriage for you depends on being willing to share center stage with a fiery, outgoing mate like yourself, especially an Aries, Sagittarius, Gemini or Libra.

VIRGO (August 23-Sept. 22) Domestic life comes easily to you, and you have many sterling qualities that make you an excellent mate. Discriminating in your choice of a partner, however, you could miss out on marriage if you're too picky. Don't appear so cerebral that potential partners fail to see your deep romantic side. A Taurus, Capricorn, Cancer or Scorpio suits you best.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) Charming, romantic and partner-oriented, you hate to do things alone and are a natural for any kind of twosome. But your ability to see both sides of a question may allow a good catch to get away while you make up your mind. It may help you decide if you know the best signs for you are Gemini, Aquarius, Leo and Sagittarius.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) Passionate, sensual and deeply emotional, you look for a soul-mate who understands you almost without words. You are more apt to marry happily if you emphasize your higher Scorpio nature. Go easy on resentments, jealousies, and power plays. You'll be most in tune with a Pisces, Cancer, Virgo or Capricorn.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) Your love of freedom and adventure can sometimes make you hesitant to settle down, at least too soon. Your optimistic, fun-loving nature helps you to win hearts easily, but then you'll be on your way. You'll relate best to a mate who's a challenge and shares your love of adventure. Try an Aries, Leo, Libra or Aquarius for best results.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) Your ambition to get to the top could interfere with your love life, but with your elegance, style and class, you attract a mate easily. In your favor is your love of tradition, family and the past which makes marriage very much a part of your life pattern. Signs most attuned to your sterling qualities are Taurus, Virgo, Scorpio and Pisces.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) Exciting but unpredictable, you draw lovers easily, but may turn them off if they are looking for real stability in a relationship. Fiercely independent, you function best in a marriage that gives you freedom to be your own unique self. Your need a good friend as well as a lover, and could find this more readily with a Gemini, Libra, Sagittarius or Aries.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) Dreamy and romantic, you look for ideal love and may be disillusioned when you don't find it. You do have the power to make dreams come true, however, when you operate from faith rather than doubt or disillusion. Your magical charms and tender sentimental nature will best be appreciated by a Cancer, Scorpio, Taurus or Capricorn.
