FATHER EDWARD FLANAGAN, 1886-1948

Father Flanagan was the founder of Boys Town, a home for boys and, more recently, girls who have no home or whose parents cannot care for them. Edward Flanagan, born in Ireland, came to the United States in 1904 and became a priest. He started Boys Town in Omaha, Nebraska, in 1921. Boys Town became an official town with a mayor and a town government in 1936. That same year a movie entitled Boys Town, starring Spencer Tracy and Mickey Rooney, was made. Father Flanagan became well known for his saying, "There's no such thing as a bad boy."
