Hi Owney Friends,
Owney arrived in Texas October 26,2000. Everyone was excited. We enjoyed his visit in El Paso. On morning announcements we shared Owney and the video from Animal Planet with our school. A lot of people were anxious to see him.
Owney asked us to write for him also. I am so glad to get out of my box and be in Mrs. Gentry's second grade class in El Paso. Helen Ball is a big elementary school. They have 1200 kids in that school. The weather was cool and cloudy. I am surprised because this is called the sun city.
They have the Sun Bowl Football Game here in December. Oh well, the kids are incredible. I'm having a wonderful time meeting new friends and two old friends from last year. Tomorrow I'll be off to Oklahoma.

10/31/00 Hi there Owney Fans,
Owney was late arriving Oklahoma. I know that we want him to remain on schedule but since he arrived on Oklahoma on Monday afternoon I did not have the heart to make him spend Halloween on the road!!! He is safe and sound in Oklahoma and will ship out around Midnight to avoid all of the goblins. He spent Halloween with the Cross Timbers students. He listened to the same story 6 times but that allowed him to meet 120 students!!! He is on his way to Ark. with a bag of Halloween treats for the receiving class. The students hated to see him go!
We will look forward to seeing Owney on line. I will post our pictures later but am attaching one for the sake of Halloween! Check out Owney in his big Halloween disguise.

11/10/00 Dear Ms. Adams,
Owney arrived yesterday while we were on a field trip to New Orleans. We took pictures of the Cabildo, Jackson Square,St Louis Cathedral, and we ate beignets, little sqaure donuts with powered sugar on them in Cafe deMonde. If we knew Owney would have arrived, we would have brought him with us to visit all those old famous places in New Orleans.
We are having a party with Owney this afternoon. We all brought stuffed animals for the party. We had a wonderful time with him. Thanks for sharing him with us.

11/13/00 Dear Friends of Owney,
Owney arrived in Grand Island, Nebraska on November 13,2000 from Louisiana after lunch recess and music class. We took him out of the box, and passed him around the class. We looked at all the things on his backpack. We gave him a small Nebraska pin. We did math, next. We were doing subtraction, and took pictures of Owney with people. Then, during the 2:00-2:30 time, he heard one reading group working on the book "Harry Potter, while others went to an ESL class, and another reading class. When everyone was back in the room, we went to our Library, and took class pictures with Owney. We all signed in the booklet, and put it back in the box.
Then, we took a "parade" around to the 5th, 4th, 3rd, and Kindergaten +class to show Owney. The 4th and 5th graders who had been in Mrs. Foster's class before were glad to see Owney visit again.
After school, the teacher packed up Owney, and took him to the mail office, and sent him on to Winfield ,Kansas.

11/20/00 Owney’s Visit to Missouri!
Owney arrived right at the end of the day on Monday, just in time to watch us create our landform islands as our performance assessment of our landforms unit, then we read for DEAR Time, and went home, leaving Owney in the good care of our janitors. On Tuesday we celebrated Owney’s arrival. We reviewed the story of Owney, The Traveling Dog, by Lynn Hall. Owney seemed to enjoy hearing his story told again. We treated Owney to sweet cornbread and lemonade as Missouri is known for it’s corn crop and it’s long hot summers where lots of lemonade stands pop up all over the roadsides! Everyone enjoyed their treats as we watched the video of Owney from Animal Planet. That was very good, chock full of information and pictures that helped us better understand the mail system and Owney’s dedication to the mailmen. Afterwards we proudly signed our names in Owney’s guest book. Some of our students took Owney down to our principal, Dr. Barbara Kohlfeld, and she was excited to see Owney at our school again. We then went out for recess while Mrs. Hicks had lunch with Owney in the classroom!
That afternoon we had our math test on measurement and Owney seemed very interested in hearing our review all about how to measure in standard and metric units. Then it was on to Social Studies and then DEAR Time.
Our class had a great time with Owney and we took our picture with him which you can see at our website. We will be anxious to watch his travels to the rest of the United States, and finally to the president. Thanks for allowing Owney to be a part of our class’s experiences this year!

Dear Friends of Owney,
Owney arrived in Flanagan, IL after school on Nov. 29. He's had a busy day with us. First he was part of our reading groups. At milkbreak we told his story again and shared dog bone cookies. He was also able to visit all of the classes from preschool through fourth grade. Everyone enjoyed hearing about his history. We gave him a "Flanagan Pride" pin to represent our school. He even went to art class with us. The video was great and we'll send that along with him to his next school. We've had such a great time finding out about his travels and we look forward to getting more and more postcards. We worked on our postcards today and will be putting them in the mail tomorrow. We've been tracking Owney on a large U.S. map and completing our own small maps as we find out where he has gone.
We made up a song to the tune of Bingo. It goes like this:
There was a dog who came to Flanagan and Owney was his name. O-W-N-E-Y,O-W-N-E-Y, O-W-N-E-Y, and Owney was his name. Maybe other schools would like to try it out with their school name, too. Mrs. Montgomery will mail Owney today so that he can visit in Billings, MT.
Sincerely, Cathy Montgomery & Flanagan Second Grade
