Due 4/12/02 in Cottonwood, arrived 5/8/02
Dear Bev and fellow Owney followers
Owney arrived at Cottonwood Middle School at lunch. My teaching partner picked him up in the office and brought him to me. When I had her class for Earth Science, I opened the box to see Owney and all the things that have been added to his box. My students began to sign the book and look at Owney and all his things. When my students came back for Earth Science they too signed the book and began examining Owney and his things. My husband came and brought my Polaroid camera so I was able to take a picture of my class and Owney. Owney was taken outside to see the playground and found he got along with Lobo our school mascot. Lobo is friendly with animals that aren't our opponents. Owney came back in and was passed around while students read or tested on their books. Two boys in my class added a keychain from Arizona State Credit Union because I said the office was having a hard time finding something from our school that had our name. One of the secretaries did find a pencil with Cottonwood Middle School and a Lobo on it. We also added a postcard with an AZ topographical map on it and the picture of my class and Cottonwood Middle School and Lobo on it. I will mail Owney tomorrow during my prep time as the Post Office is just two doors down the road. Sixth graders enjoy having Owney just as much as 2nd graders. They just don't bring in postcards like the younger kids did. I made some and will get them mailed tomorrow when I mail Owney. After school a parent came by and saw Owney and signed the book. Another teacher in our building that teaches the multiple handicap asked if her class could see Owney in the morning. When I went into the office, I met the Assistant Superintendent of our district there and showed her Owney and told her about him so she signed the book too. The school librarian also saw Owney and signed the book. Of course, my teaching partner signed the book as she has been doing things with the postcards in her Social Studies classes.
Thanks for including us on this project.

Mrs. Hanson and her class loved me. They took me to an assembly Monday morning. I also enjoyed playing soccer with them at recess. My Murray friends put on a puppet show just for me. I loved curling up at night with all the kids' stuffed animals.
Well, Mrs. Hanson went to the post office during her lunch break Monday. Washington friends, here I come!

Due 4/26/02 in Yakima, arrive 5/20/02
Mrs. Deloza just went on maternity leave. Owney is here. Owney went to the park for a picnic with Mrs. Deloza's class. He ate frijoles, salads, and chicken. It was a beautiful sunny, spring day. Today he will be going to play practice. Her class is putting on the grape vine connection. He will help Felipe Reyes practice his lines as Stanley, the leading character. This is a musical and we all know how Owney loves to howl! He'll be on his way as soon as we get the next address. It wasn't in the box this time.
Bye for now.

Due 5/6/02 in Beaverton, arrived 5/28/02 Owney had a great day in Beaverton, Oregon. Some of the class knew Owney from last year with Ms. Burnett. Owney came out and said hi to all. Everyone signed his book. He visited music class and got to attend an assembly of the high school choir from Southridge. We were amazed at how much information is in the box and Owney is on his way.

Due 5/10/02 in Las Vegas, arrived 5/31/02
Owney arrived this morning, Friday, May 31, 2002, and was immediately brought to me. We were in third grade assembly and Owney joined us. Since our school is named after a Japanese man, the month of May is highlighting Japan. We were making origami figures.
Owney went to the library, teachers' lounge, students'lunchroom, playground and room 25. In room 25, my class worked with Owney measuring him and other objects in the classroom.
After school Owney was put in a new box. His old one was falling apart even with all the tape on it. He is now off to Hawaii. Aloha!
The children from last year enjoyed seeing Owney today, too. It was Hawaiian Day at school. Owney had fun with that experience also. He was enjoyed by all.

Due 5/20/02 in Camarillo, arrived 6/12/02
Owney has completed his journey to the states. He arrived in California on Wednesday, June 12. We eagerly opened his box and found Owney wearing all of his many pins and trinkets. We were overjoyed that he made it "home" before the end of the school year.
Owney has traveled 22,629 miles this school year. There were 2,196 signatures in his journal. It always amazes me that this little stuffed animal has touched so many lives. Our little Owney has actually been hugged and loved by so many children throughout our nation.
Owney will continue his journey to the White House. I will do all I can to have each of us receive a letter from the president. I hope all of you have a great summer. If you haven't already confirmed that you will be continuing with the project next year, please send me an e-mail.

Thank you for participating in the project.

Back to the opening.
