Owney Heads West

21 New Hampshire
Due 11/16/01 in Derry, arrived 12/19/01
We really enjoyed having Owney visit South Range School in Derry, New Hampshire. He had a very busy day visiting our first grades and our third grade buddies. We had our Christmas parties on Thursday afternoon so he joined us for our first grade party.
We had a talent show and he enjoyed singing along with the children. He needed his socks to go out on the playground as it was quite cold and windy. Riley took him to Reading Recovery to show him how he was learning how to read. Kendall took him to the cafeteria for lunch. Her grandmother works in our cafeteria so Owney really got to enjoy a special lunch. Phillip took Owney to our computer lab and he rested on top of one of the computers and watched the children as they worked. He really liked doing math facts with magnetic numbers during one of our math games. We said goodby and took him to the Post Office after school on December 20. He is now on his way to Vermont. We hope that he doesn't have to spend the entire Christmas vacation in his traveling container. Our postcards were mailed along with Owney.

22 Vermont
Due 11/21/01 in So. Burlington, arrived 12/26/01
I am delighted to report that Owney arrived safely in Vermont during our holiday break. The best news, however, is that he did not have to spend the entire vacation in his traveling container. When I heard that he had arrived the day after Christmas, I retrieved the box from school so that Owney could take part in a couple of truly exciting activities. On December 29th, the Olympic Torch Relay made its way through the streets of Burlington and OWNEY WAS THERE! I then passed Owney on to one of our students so that Owney could take part in Burlington's First Night festivities on New Year's Eve. Owney watched a dragon parade and got to meet the Vermont Expos baseball team's mascot, Champ.
I'm now working on a web page showing Owney's Vermont adventures.
We worked on our postcards today and will send them all out with Owney tomorrow. Thanks for sharing Owney with us!

23 New York
Due 11/28/01 in Nassau, arrived 1/8/02
Owney arrived in Rensselaer County, Nassau, New York during a snowstorm; the children were delighted to have a snow day off from school! Our first this school year! Owney spent Monday and part of Tuesday at the Nassau Post Office, and of course felt right at home (Nassau is only 15 miles southeast of Albany, NY, where Owney's original saga began.) with the postal workers among the mailbags! It was a well deserved rest, after his New Year's festivities in Vermont!
Owney had a restful evening, Tuesday, Jan. 8, as he arrived at school after the children had been dismissed. On Wednesday morning, the 18 kindergarten children in Mrs. Schwarz' class at the Donald P. Sutherland School greeted Owney with excitement! He loved spending the morning with the children, and sharing his travel baggage with them as they worked on I-Cares and at choices during their Choice Workshop time. Judging from past experience, Owney decided to spend lunchtime in the classroom with Mrs. Schwarz and Mrs. Gresser. After lunch, he joined the children in gym and loved doing gymnastics! The rest of the afternoon, Owney was the star as the children learned more about Owney's story from the Internet. Brianna even wrote about him in her journal! Owney received a Donald P. Sutherland School key tag, which he proudly wears on his collar! He received a NY State coloring book and pictures of the Adirondack Park to add to his baggage. We wish him well on his journey to Pennsylvania!

24 Pennsylvania
Due 12/3/01 in Johnstown, arrived 1/15/02
I have just spent a day in Fourth Grade, St. Clement School, Johnstown, PA. In the morning I saw a video detailing the history of my host city. Did you know Johnstown was a big steel city? It manufactured much of the iron and steel rails that brought the railroads out West!In those long ago days it also manufactured a lot of barbed wire that put an end to the big cattle drives. Poor Johnstown was flooded three times, in 1889, 1936, and again in 1977. Johnstown's first flood is famous; people from all over the world sent money and goods to help the people rebuild after the whole city was destroyed and 2,200 people died. Clara Barton and the Red Cross Foundation stayed in Johnstown for months afterward. The people of this town were so grateful for her help, they presented her with a diamond necklace when her waork was finally done and she left the city. There is talk of a miniseries about the 1889 flood. It will be based on a book by David McCullough. Anyway, after that captivating video, I was in a spelling bee. Those words are hard!
It worked up my appetite for lunch. That's when I got to see many of my friends from the three previous visits I made to St. Clement School. Kids sure love me! In the afternoon there was a party in my honor, and like many schools, all the treats were "home-grown." The Fourth Graders looked at the stuff in my box, signed my guest book, and wrote out postcards. Then it was time to say good-bye and head for the post office. The mailmen love me, too! Look out, Ohio, I'm on my way! My thanks again to dear Beverly Adams who sends me on this journey every year.
Best wishes to everyone from PA,
Owney

25 Ohio
Due 1/18/02 in Kirtland, arrived 1/17/02
Owney arrived in Kirtland, Ohio on Thursday afternooon, January 17, 2002. He spent Friday morning touring the elementary school and the afternoon in the middle school.
Middle school students are designing post cards about Ohio on the computer. Those cards should be ready to mail by Friday.
Since we have no school on Martin Luther King Day and our semester break for students on Tuesday, I thought Owney should travel this weekend. So, he went by US Postal service on Saturday morning, and the nice man at the counter assured me he should arrive in Michigan on Tuesday, January 22. Hopefully, this will help him make up a little time.

Due 1/24/02 in New Hudson MI, arrived 1/22/02
Owney arrived in Michigan Tuesday after school. Since we have all day every other day Kindergarten with both classes having a half day only on Wed. this worked out great. He will spend the day Wed. with both classes and I will then over night him to Connersville IN. Owney has gathered a LOT of stuff in his box from each state and has some great pins and keychains. He also has almost 700 signatures in his journal! Michigan postcards are on their way, and Owney is filling them up with Michigan facts.

27 Indiana
Due 1/29/02 in Connersville, arrived 1/28/02
Dear Friends,
I had a wonderful time in Indiana. It is 60 degrees there today. A couple of years ago, I remember a big snowstorm they had during January. The first grade class wrote riddles and poems about me. I feel like a star! After lunch, their fourth grade pals came down for a celebration. I sure like that Hoosier hospitality! We went to the gym to shoot some hoops. Basketball is a big sport here. I watched while they made 49 postcards to send to all of you. There were race cars, covered bridges, and all sorts of neat pictures on the post cards. I learned a lot about Indiana. Then we played Owney Says - their version of Simon says. Wow, we sure got hungry. I am glad they had puppy chow for me. The kids also ate apples in honor of John Chapman, Johnny Appleseed. Did you know that he died and is buried in Indiana? We also ate popcorn because Indiana grows lots of popcorn. Before I knew it, it was time for the students to go home. Mrs. Newton said that over 700 people have seen me now. She also said it is time for me to get my paws off of the computer and get back in the box. I should be in Kentucky tomorrow.

Due 2/4/02 in Rockholds, arrived 1/30/02
Hi,
Owney arrived at our school today! We were in the computer lab, when the secretary called and told me to come to the office to get a very big package. We were so excited to open the box and find Owney and all his things inside.
Our second grade reading buddies were also excited to see Owney, as they have been reading the postcards along with us. They helped us write some letters to include in Owney's box, and they are helping us finish addressing our postcards tomorrow.

29 Illinois
Due 2/8/02 in Flanagan, arrived 2/15/02
Owney arrived in Flanagan last Friday, Feb. 15. There was no school until Tues. due to President's Day. We mailed him today, Feb. 21 & he should be in Milton, WI in a couple of days--so says our Postmaster. The Postmaster was really interested to hear Owney's story. We plan to give him a copy of Owney, the Traveling Dog. A thought for the program next year is to collect pictures of all of the post offices where he has been mailed. I wonder if the original Owney was ever in some of our post offices long ago? We loved having Owney in our class & we took several pictures. Our postcards are nearly finished & will be mailed soon. This was a fun project. We gave Owney two mementos: an Illinois State Redbirds keychain and a Flanagan Pride pin. Our superintendent gave us his pin from the lapel of his own suit!! Thanks, Mr. Mitchell. Owney visited the kindergarten & 4th grade classes, too, and had his picture taken several times. We'll try to send some of these pictures soon.
