Aloha!
Sorry for the e-mail delay! Owney arrived late in the day on Monday 8/18/03. We were all so happy to see him! Everyone marveled at how sweet he looked. We took him to the Health Room and weighed him, pre-lei, pins,... Owney weighed 3/4 pound. I'm sure he'll "gain" weight as he travels from school to school.
On Tuesday 8/19/03 Owney visited several preschool classes, first grade, second grade, third grade, and fifth grade classes. He was even an honored guest at a student's in-school birthday party! Owney takes much aloha with him. We taught him sign language and Hawaiian, there is a study sheet for signs and a book of Hawaiian language. He's wearing a Hawaiian honu (sea turtle) t-shirt, homemade lei, and nene goose pin. We also sent a "spy glass" so you can all see Hawaii's volcanoes!
Owney left Tuesday afternoon for on his trip to Arizona. We look forward to hearing about his travels!
Aloha!

Dear Friends of Owney
Owney arrived in Cottonwood, Arizona late Monday afternoon. He was taken to a 2nd grade classroom the next morning where the students enjoyed him. Mrs. Wieweck had made a book with Owney's story and postcards from last years trip. This was shared and then they explored the box with Owney in it. These students learned about Hawaii last year so were enthralled with the information from there. Owney did different activities with the students- a reading lesson, a math lesson, etc. One student was so well behaved that she got to take Owney out to the playground and let him play. Owney says the weather is too hot (106) to play much but the students don't complain. Owney enjoyed the teacher, Mrs. Keller, because she is always smiling and very nice. Owney was able to spend a little time the next morning with the students until Mrs. Wieweck picked him up to take him back to the post office to send him on to the next state, Texas. These students are anxious to hear about Owney's travels and hope he has a safe trip.
Buenos Tardes y Bienvienido to all!

Hi Bev! Sorry this is late but its been crazy this week.
Owney arrived over the Labor Day weekend so we were able to open his box live on the air for our televised school morning announcements. The school was very excited as we took him out of the box. Owney was very excited as well to be in Texas again. We admired his beautiful Hawaiian t-shirt and lei as well as the lovely pictures in the view finders from Arizona and Hawaii. We also enjoyed learning some sign language and some Hawaiian words. We added a "Don't Mess With Texas" pin and a Helen Ball lanyard that all of the teachers and staff wear around their necks to hold our keys here at Helen Ball. Owney visited with our computer teacher and principal who were also in the room during the broadcast. He then spent some time with all of the boys and girls in our class. he received so many hugs! We went around visiting different classes and they were so happy to see him again. He felt so special! He was able to spend some time on the computer when our class went to the computer lab. He is quite a techie! He was also able to hear a story in the library. He really enjoyed that! He spent some time in PE and had a great lunch. He even participated when our counselor came for our lesson on citizenship. He sure is a great citizen! It was sad to see Owney go but we know that he will have a fabulous time as he heads off to 46 more states. We had a wonderful time with Owney and we are already excited to see him again next year!
Our postcards were mailed out with Owney so you should be receiving them soon.
Hope you enjoy them!
