The Opening Minutes of the Game
At the beginning of a game, you'll usually start with a meager
four workers and 50 minerals. Your first action should be to
spend the 50 minerals to build another worker. Next, order
your workers to start gathering minerals. Note that only one
worker unit can gather minerals from the same location at one
time-so spread them out. If you don't, all of your workers will
wait around the same field while only one of the group actually
collects minerals. This is a complete waste of your worker
force, and a real crime when plenty of unoccupied fields
abound!
For your first construction task (after building a few more
workers), build another Supply Depot, Pylon, or Overlord so
that you can produce even more workers. Ideally, you should
time the structure (or Overlord) such that it is ready for use
before you hit the unit limit. Keep pumping out the workers
(SCVs, Probes, or Drones). As a general rule, build up your
worker force until it's approximately twice the number of
mineral fields in the immediate area. If the worker levels rise
too high, however, you'll see overcrowding in the mineral fields
and probably slow down resource gathering.
After you have your first worker building structure underway,
the next structure you should build is one that can produce
combat units-namely, a Barracks, Gateway, or Spawning
Pool. Although your first priority is to build more workers and
the supply structures to support them, whenever you have
leftover minerals, spend it on new combat units. Still have
surplus minerals? It's up to you whether to build new structures
or to build another unit production structure to train more
combat units for an early attack.
