Primary defense
Preliminary Defense
Early on, rely on your combat units for defense. The Terran
Bunker is inexpensive enough to act as a good defensive
investment early in the game. However, Protoss and Zerg
players shouldn't build more than one or two defensive
structures until later in the game because the early available
buildings aren't cost effective; build more combat units instead
if you're wary of an early attack.
Above all, protect your valuable workers early in the game. If
your opponent tries to attack your workers, you must rush to
their aid. Unless you have no other choice, avoid attacking
enemy units with your workers. Usually, it's more cost effective
to let your workers ignore the intruders, and keep collecting
minerals and gas, instead of fighting and facing certain death.
It is usually a good idea to allow your opponent to attack your
structures. Most of the game's early units don't have the attack
power to bring down a building in a decent time. It's certainly
preferable than the opponent attacking your workers. Thus,
leave your military units on the side and let your opponent
attack your buildings, then attack his flank. In many cases, the
opponent's units will continue to attack the building while you
wipe out his units. At least initially, you will be able to fight the
enemy's units one by one as enemy units are busy attacking
other buildings and will have to walk over to meet your
defense.
