Chapter 17

"You idiot!" screamed Veronica. "How could you let them do that to you!"

"It hurt. That girl can really pinch," said Ryan, rubbing his cheek, and smiled. "I'd like to see her in action. She's fisty."

"Oh, give me a break and get out of my face," yelled Veronica, pushing him away from her. Ryan mumbled something and left.

"I'll just have to do it by myself. If want anything done right, you have to do it yourself," Veronica told herself. "But how?"

Veronica looked at her watch. The fireworks were going to start soon. Veronica knew that Jewel, Summer and the guys would be staying for them. There was a big hill that was a great spot to watch the fireworks and Veroinca knew from past years that Summer and Jewel always sat there.

"I'll just have to plan a little surprise for them, while they're distracted by the fireworks," grinned Veronica.

"So where are the fireworks going to be?" asked Scott.

"Pretty much right above us," said Summer, pointing to the sky.

They were all underneath a huge tree on the hill and were looking up at the cloudless black sky. Summer, Scott, Dave and Jewel were all sitting underneath the main part of the tree while Clint and Bob were a few feet in front of them. It was a perfect night for fireworks. It was warm and cloudless and almost everyone was somewhere watching the fireworks. It was one of the best parts of the Stampede and the hill was the best place to be sitting.

At that moment, the sky lit up with fireworks. The noice was earshattering but it was so beautiful that nobody bothered to plug their ears.

Halfway through the colorful show, there was a different kind of crack in the air, but no one paied attention to it........until too late.

It all happened in 10 seconds. Without warning , a branch (a huge one) came crashing down from the tree, right above Jewel, Summer, Dave and Scott. The fireworks were so loud, none of them heard it until it came crashing down onto them. They all disappered under the smaller branches and leaves.

People screamed. Some ran away to get help, some came running up to the tree to se if the 4 were alright. People yelled to call and ambluence as a pool of blood escaped from under the leaves. But no one noticed the end of the branch, which had been sawed clean.
