Nick, Brian, Desteny's father and brother and Melody's parents were all waiting in the hospital waiting room an hour later. Everyone was in complete shock. No one had moved since Melody and Desteny had been rolled through the emergancy doors. Desteny was unconuious and Melody was blacking out every once in a while.
Then, the emergency doors opened and Melody came out with a doctor. She had a big bandage on her arm and looked very tired. She went over to everyone, sitting down, assuring them she was fine.
"How's Desteny?" she asked.
"We don't know. They haven't told us anything," said Nick, on the verge of tears. Melody hugged him tightly.
Just then, Desteny's doctor came through the doors. "We've got to stop meeting like this," he said, light-heartedly.
"How's my sister?" asked Billy, standing up, worried as hell.
"She's stable and she's going to be fine. She was shot in the lower stomach. The good news is the bullet didn't hit any major organs so she will make a full recovery." Everyone sighed with relief. "But we found out something very interesting. I don't know if she's told anyone of you but, she's pregnant."
Eveyone stared at the doctor in shock.
"What??" cried Melody. "She must not know! She would have told me!"
"Yes, well, she is about 3 weeks pregnant," said the doctor.
Brian looked at Nick, knowing if anyone knew, it would be him. "Nick, did you know?"
Nick's eyes were wide with shock. "No. I didn't know," he said quietly.
"Well don't get too excited. I have some bad news. The bullet, it hit her womn. It didn't hit the baby, but the liquid in her womn is leaking out and the baby needs the liquid to grow properly," explained the doctor.
"What do you mean?" asked a pale and confused Melody.
"I'm saying...she might lose the baby," said the doctor gentaly.
Nick's knees gave out and he slowly knelled down on the floor, tears falling down his cheeks. Brian kneeled next to him, trying to comfort him. Desteny's dad gasped, tears coming to his own eyes.
"I haven't told Desteny yet. I'll leave that to one of you. She's in room 365 and you can go in," said the doctor. He turned and left.
Everyone just stayed silent for a second, not sure what to say. Melody broke the silents. "We've gotta tell her. She has to know this."
"I'll tell her," said Nick, softly, wiping away his tears. Nick slowly got up and walked through the emergency doors. He walked to room 365. For a moment, Nick just stood outside the door, staring at it. He sighed and opened the door, preparing to tell the love of his life that she might lose the baby she was carrying and didn't know.
Inside, Desteny was sitting in bed, watching Bugs Bunny on the TV in the cornor, laughing. Nick smiled. 'She must be alright. Even a gunshot won't keep her from watching cartoons," thought Nick.
Desteny looked up from the TV. "Hey," she said smiling. Desteny looked normal excpet for the bandage on her stomach and am I-V in her arm.
"Hey Dest. How you feeling?" asked Nick, sitting beside her on the bed and kissing her gentaly.
Desteny gave a small laugh. "A little sore and shaken, but the doctor said I'll be just fine." She saw saddness in Nick's eyes. "What's wrong? Didn't the doctor tell you?" asked Desteny.
"Ya, the doctor told us. That's just it. He told us something else too," said Nick, avoiding Desteny's eyes.
"Nick, what? Tell me," asked Desteny, quietly.
"Your pregnant," said Nick, looking into Desteny's green eyes.
Desteny stared at Nick for a second. "I'm what?" asked Desteny, wide eyed.
Nick sighed, a small smile on his face. "Your pregnant," he repeated.
"Oh my gawd! No way!" cried Desteny, totally shocked.
"Wait. There's bad news," said Nick, sadly.
Desteny's smile faded and a look of terror replaced it. "Oh no. Don't tell me the bullet..." said Desteny, her voice shaking.
"No! The bullet didn't hit the baby," said Nick, quickly. Desteny sighed with releif. "But it hit you womn and the doctor said some of the liqid has came out. The baby needs that to survive," said Nick, his voice cracking.
"So what does that mean?" asked Desteny, tears in her eyes.
"It...it means that you might loose the baby," said Nick, tears falling from his eyes.
Desteny seached his eyes, almost pleaded with him to be lying. But she fould only sadness.
Tears fell from her eyes as Desteny shut her eyes. Then she looked at Nick. "Nick, why do these things always happen to us?" she sobbed.
Nick reached out and hugged her, unable to say anything. For a long time, they just sat there, crying.
'How are we going to get through this?' wondered Nick. 'How?'
