James Stoddard

James Stoddard is an excellent new author, though I have only read his first book.

*The High House*

It is a return to traditional 'high fantasy' when Tolkien imitations weren't popping up on shelves like daisies. Consequently, there is none of the usual blood, gore or sex, only a beautiful (but unfortunately for me, slightly religious) parable set in a sprawling house, all told with beautiful prose. It is slightly reminiscent of Dunsany, and many lines within are like poetry. Quite good. *The False House*

Regrettably suffers a bit from sequilities, and lays on the messages about faith rather too heavily for my taste. (The line, "No man dies an atheist" especially annoyed me.) The women (though there ARE women this time!) are both pretty bland.
