Kelly Hu (Rae) was thrilled her parents came to California from Hawaii for her birthday. "I got them tickets to Jay Leno," she says. "And my Japanese Papa brought a sushi chef with him from Japan. We had a great sushi party that night." Her "Japanese Papa" is "like an informal godfather, a great friend of the family," but Hu is actually Chinese-Hawaiian-English. In Chinese culture "we're already considered a year old at birth. If you're 59, in Chineseyou're 60," she explains. Last month, Hu went back to Hawaii to celebrate her grandmother's 80th and father's 60th birthdays, but she wasn't sure if that was the Chinese 60 and 80 or American. "I'm not completely certain," replies the diplomatic Hu.
