Last weekend, Barbara, Kathleen and I got all dressed up
and went to the
PhilHarmonic at the Maritime.
It was very different. There was Phil,
Bobby, Donna, Mickey,
Graham Nash, Bruce and others.
Sing along. They
flashed the words on the wall.
After the show, for those who had the $150 tickets,
there was a
reception at the Hilton.
A huge food layout, open bar and a small
stage.
When we first got there, there was some small band on stage,
but most of the people were busy eating.
Then there was a break, and
Bruce and Bobby were in the crowd
of about 100 people, eating, talking
and such.
Then a band named Broken Angles came on.
Then did long,
space jams,
and the guitar player was good -
he had that Jerry
sweetness.
Another break. I did not know what to expect.
At this point I was
ready to leave,
it seemed like not much was going to happen next.
Then Phil, Bobby, Donna, Bruce,
the guitar player from Broken Angles
and a drummer came out.
It was like a concert in my living room.
We
were ten feet from the stage and not crowded.
They played "Birdsong", "Big River", "Box O Rain",...,...,"Bertha"
It was so
cool.
It was well worth the price of admission.
Barbara said she could
die happy now,
all of our dreams had come true (only without Jerry)
a
private Grateful Dead concert !
I will never forget that night !
As we left, we all got a goddie bag with a poster,
a stage-bill, a CD
signed by Phil.
Barbara even took one of the table decorations - a
flower basket.
Later.

------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dad,
My friend Sue was also at the show,
but not the after party, but
she did get the setlist
and who all was there.
That guitar player
you said had that "Jerry Sweetness" was David Gans.
Here's what she had to say...
As this event sold out first day via MO,
I didn't have a ticket until
the day of the show!
Alot of other folks found out they couldn't
score a ticket to this
as they greatly undersold the Maritime
to give
it a family type atmosphere.
They gave out really cool tshirts with
your ticket
and also served cookies and cider before
and during the
intermission.
In addition to Phil, Bobby, Donna Jean,
Mickey, Graham, and Bruce...
Jackie LaBranch from the JGB, Edie Brickell, and Michael Tilson
Thomas,
conductor of the SF symphony.
By far the loudest and longest ovation was for the
introduction of
Donna Jean,
who was overwhelmed with the love she felt
from the
crowd as were many of us also.
Actually this is David Gans'(DJ and host of the Grateful Dead Hour)
dead cover band, Broken Angels, who play in Berkeley and who also
shared the bill with Mr. Lesh at the Maritime for a benefit a few
weeks back. Duane Day and Scott Fernandez of Jerry's Kids often sit
in with Gans' impromptu sets of musicians. He had a regular weekly
gig going for a while at
Larry Blake's last summer, again in
Berkeley.
I heard this set with Donna, Bobby Phil,
David and Clayton on drums
was extraordinary.
I know many who say they will spring for the VIP
tix next year in order to see something like this again.
